How Much Was Your Delay From/to Swampy?

Recommended Posts

now with the second runway closed for over 2 months, all arrivals and departures on one runway and the budget carriers not yet moved back to Don Muang, most of the flights seem to be delayed

arrived this week on a long haul flight and had to circle for over 20 minutes west of Bangkok, which added up to a total delay of 90 minutes. And that was in the later afternoon, no peaktime at all.

tomorrow I have a departing flight during peak time! expect to get bad or maybe they give TG some preference?

and last night they had to close the only remaining runway for one hour due to a crack! what a mess

from the Nation:

AOT is fixing crack on West Runway

The Nation July 6, 2012 2:57 pm

Airports of Thailand Plc, the operator of Suvarnabhumi Airport, is fixing the crack on the West Runway found last night.

The crack, spanning for one feet, prompted the closure of the runway during 8.30-9.30pm last night for fixing. An official of the company attributed the crack to water infiltration during the floods.

A number of 11 flights were diverted to U-Tapao, Don Mueang and Chiang Mai airports during the closure.

At present, the East Runway was closed for maintenance.

AOT, which has a plan to make Suvarnabhumi one of the world’s top airport, has not yet posted any announcement on its website.

Remember the crash of the Concorde? It was caused by debris on the runway. I guess severe cracks could produce debris as well...

Airport says runway subsidence 'just wear and tear'

Suvarnabhumi airport general manager Somchai Sawasdeepon is insisting Thursday's subsidence on the western runway was caused by normal wear and tear.

But airline managers yesterday questioned if the airfield had been built with proper civil engineering techniques and high-standard construction materials. :surprised:

An area of 3,600 sq cm (60cm by 60cm) at the northern part of the western runway was found to have subsided by 5cm about 8pm on Thursday night.

The airport was closed for repairs about 8.30pm.

It also forced 11 aircraft to divert to three other airports _ three to Don Muang, seven to U-tapao and one to Chiang Mai, the Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) said.

The western runway was reopened at 9pm when the repair work had been completed.

''It could be problems associated with the airport restructuring, technology adopted for construction and the quality of construction materials,'' said a senior manager of an European airline, who asked to remain anonymous.

But Mr Somchai yesterday insisted the problem was due to heavy use of the western runway as the other runway, on the eastern side, has been closed for an overlay since June 11. The western runway is pending its first complete overlay since Suvarnabhumi opened in September 2006 and the AoT expects to carry out the work next year.

''There is wear and tear for an airport which has handled some 1.5 million flights,'' Mr Somchai said, stressing the airport's safety should not be put in doubt as the AoT has safety standards to maintain.

However, Thailand-based managers for international airlines said they were astonished by the large number of ''soft surface'' problems.

Marisa Pongpattanapun, chairwoman of the Airline Operators Committee, a coalition of global airline managers at Suvarnabhumi, yesterday stopped short of criticising the airport's quality, but urged the AoT to run thorough checks and see if anything else needs to be fixed to prevent problems recurring.

She urged the AoT to keep in mind the extra financial burden that airlines have to bear because of the glitches.

flew into Swampy last night. Plane would have arrived around 15 minutes early but then we circled nearly one hour over Khao Yai resulting in a delay of around 40 minutes. dam it!

and we also had to use the bus as the plane did not dock at a gate. Heard from a airport employee, that also a lot of gates are currently broken! dam it!

second runway seems to be still completely closed despite some announcements saying the opposite

heard that they are building a new airport in Beijing with 9 (!) runways! Frankly 2 runways are not sufficient for a airport the size of Swampy and if they have to close one for repair, it is a total mess for 2 months!

Two runways is pathetic, particularly when it was a 'greenfields' site (ok, swamp..) - even Sydney has three and there is endless debate about the need for a fourth (versus building a second airport waaaay out west).

Did you ever fly into KLIA ? Havent seen a trip report ....
