Its 2012, and this is still on the curriculum ? FFS.

Also, fwiw, I finally realised why so many Thai girls look at me strangely when I tell them my Christian name - or at least the contraction of same. Its very close to a common name for Thai males - even the pronunciation sounds very similar to my ears, ending in 'tit' (!) instead of 'tee'. Laugh if you will, but you will find a version of my name in every Latin-derived language I can think of, right through the Celtic countries and beyond. Of course, the girls dont know that, but I could swear I've heard one or two refer to me as 'Artur' ..... :clown:

Hi,

Don't understand what you are upset about. Is it the words like ghost and mermaid?

If so, why shouldn't they be taught? Sure, they may be for stuff that doesn't exist, but they are part of the language.

Anyway, maybe I misunderstood you completely.

KS, would you give it a complete category in line with things like 'Greetings' and 'Pronouns' ? Its the weight assigned to something that is, in most other cultures, left with miscellany like specialist technical terms. I expect that I could survive in Germany without ever having to know the German mythology around ghosts and demons - however vivid that might be in the metal fraternity. Is it any sillier than believing in the Holy Trinity ? Probably not, but only religious nutbags are bought up to actively fear that aspect of Christianity. Boggles my mind that Thais can drive BMWs to glittering office towers, work with computers and still believe in this 12th-century gobbledygook. If you ran into a Farang in a bar who told you they couldnt live in a house alone because they feared ghosts and demons, you'd politely excuse yourself and move to another bar. If a Thai told you the same thing, you'd probably just smile and nod - happy to hear otherwise.

Hi,

No argument from me on that issue.

The level of superstition in this country is unbelievable. I would say (pure guess of course, no data at all to back me up) that probably 99% of the population beliefs in spirits and ghosts. Hell, there are shows on TV dealing with this and they are totally serious.

I agree that the level of silly superstitions in Thailand is off the chart...but are the less-educated of any culture immune? Let us not forget all the stupid, stupid farang who believed that "Y2K" meant anything and acted like fools at its coming...

What's coming later this year will make Y2K pale in comparison...all the hysteria over all this totally misunderstood "Mayan Calendar" 2012 bullshit...mark my words, you will see some of your friends, whom you otherwise thought to be rational people, start to behave not that differently than the hyper-superstitious Thais...

No, they're not really. I'm a hardcore card carrying atheist, but have conflicting feelings about religion. As a matter of fact to be perfectly honest - in many ways I think it's one of the greatest inventions humanity ever came up with. Not kidding. It's an attempt to make sense of things and impart some sort of 'higher meaning.' It gets twisted all the time, and if there's one group I'm prejudice against - it would be Evangelical Christians. But... yeah.

Higher meaning and spirituality ain't a bad thing. We just have a long way to go.
