BelgianBoy
Thailand is on track to secure a round of the 2014 World Championship. The southeast Asian country made its intentions clear recently by successfully bidding to host this year's end-of-season Race of Champions in December, which will be attended by reigning World Champion Sebastian Vettel. Talks have also been taking place about bringing Formula One to Thailand. "Our discussions with Bernie Ecclestone have gone smoothly. We expect to get rights to host a Grand Prix from 2014 onwards," Kanokphand Chulakasem, governor of the Sports Authority of Thailand, is quoted by the Phuket News. The Thai daily, The Nation, said 51 percent Red Bull energy drink owner and co-founder Chalerm Yoovidhya is playing a role in the logistics of the Thai Grand Prix. http://formula-one.speedtv.com/article/f1-thailand-eyes-2014-formula-one-grand-prix-debut/ BB
Flashermac
F1 already has a Malaysian ciruit and a Singaporean circuit. Do you think they will accept another in SE Asia? To do so would also require an existing circuit to be dropped. Maybe Bangkok can replace Monaco. F1 cars roaring down Sukhuwit with the hookers waving to cheer them on might be fun. Tell me who in Thailand can build a circuit to F1 standards? For that matter, who could even build the road surface? This is just Chalerm Yoovidhya trying to get something for his grandson to play with.
radioman
Then if they line the circuit with police instead of barriers it will lend weight to how even superstars sports blokes can drag the odd cop along the road so no one should blame a Ferrari if it goes a bit mental. Whilst I've been a lifelong fan of the brmm brmm's Thailand is quite the worst possible place I can think of to host such an event. Mind that goes for almost all the other recent venues as well. If their really is anything to this tale then it is, like all the others, all about the money, nothing about the sport. Were it otherwise then it would take a decade or more to go from where Thailand is today in motorsport terms to hosting a GP.
Flashermac
The Pattaya Circuit opened in the mid 1980s, with hopes of attracting international competition. The international folks looked at the track, shook their heads and said ... no way! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bira_Circuit http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Prince_Bira p.s. Screw you, Hamilton, for jumping ship!
The_Munchmaster
I hope they know that big Bernie Ecclestone expects to be paid huge amounts of money for the rights to host one of "his" grand prix.
Coss
If they do get it, they'll time it for the middle of the flood season, but the government will guarantee no floods, so that'll be alright then, because everyone will have paid and money will be in the bank/pocket, problem gone.
