Medical equipment, along with some other items, are not included in the hand carry allowance on most airlines so they aren't doing you any favors.

Of course Specialist's, and any other medication/medical equipment is generally not counted in the 10/15 kg carry on/one bag limit

Those statements were most definitely NOT true for Thai Air in Frankfurt when I went through there a few years ago. I went through HELL with their gate agent. Their attitude was "Rules are rules, there are NO exceptions."

That's shit mate - hope you let the powers that be know afterwards what happened. It's standard on most airlines - medicinal and certain valuables (eg cameras and laptops which may not be covered if checked in) are exempt. Would have expected better on Thai Air.

At the time, I just wanted to get on the airplane and get to Bangkok. I wasn't aware of the usual exception. Two years later, I'm not going to worry about it, and I do not expect to see Frankfurt or Thai Air again any time soon.

(If American Airlines doesn't fix their current glitch with JAL, my next ride is likely to be on Cathay Pacific. Should be interesting.)
