Flashermac
One of the Raven pilots had already been accepted for astronaut training, but was told he had to complete his combat tour first. His Bird Dog was shot down and the NVA killed him on the ground.
cavanami
...as well as not having the proper armor plates! The Ravens meet up every year usually in Texas. Not too many left anymore...
The_Munchmaster
Update from return trip last month Day 2 (2 December 2012) Although the drive was quite long it was great to see some of the countryside and a collapsed bridge! We went back to Lao Zoo at my request and surprisingly the bridge had been repaired, partly using the steel from the original bridge. Coss drove across it quite gingerly and I can’t say I blamed him. Wonder how long it will be before it collapses again?
The_Munchmaster
Update from return trip last month Day 3 (3 December 2012) After a wander around this interesting even bizarre park we headed back into Vientiane and a Lao Korean restaurant that Coss had recommended. We were quite early so not a lot of customers, although it was fairly busy by the time we left. Coss did the ordering and this is what we received. One of the meat dishes was clearly bacon but the other had a rather unpleasant pasty pink look about it and did not look very appetizing. Coss explained that it was cow breast, i.e., cows udder! From then on I hogged the bacon (no pun intended) and left the udder to Coss who clearly enjoys the stuff. I did try the udder but after about 5 minutes chewing one piece I discretely spat it out. We went back to the Lao Korean restaurant, this time with MLG and MLGBF and fortunately no cows breasts were ordered this time! Still not my type of dining though so I concentrated on the LBL’s. The_Munchmaster
Update from return trip last month Day 5 (5 December 2012) By mid afternoon I was settled in so decided to go out for a wander, preferably to somewhere I could have a few cold ones. I had a very basic map pulled from a guide and on it was Martin’s Pub so I reckoned that would be a good place to head to.Moving on I eventually found Martin’s Pub but it was closed and looked as if it had been that way for some time. Martin’s pub is definitely deceased and the sign removed. I wonder who Martin is / was?
The_Munchmaster
Update from return trip last month Day 5 (5 December 2012) I crossed back over and continued down the road until I came to a bridge over the river (Khan River), a steel and timber structure for pedestrians and motorbikes only. I thought about crossing but it was late afternoon so I thought I’d leave that for another day. This time I did cross the bridge but on the other side was just a very ordinary looking street of shops and houses so I did a U turn and crossed back. The_Munchmaster
Update from return trip last month Day 5 (5 December 2012) ....So back the way I came and a stop at a German restaurant, which seemed to specialize in ice cream, and I couldn’t resist the fried bananas and ice cream for Baht 120. The German Restaurant was closed and signage removed so I think it has closed permanently, not just because it was low season. I did actually think when I visited it previously that it might struggle in what is basically back packer country.
The_Munchmaster
Update from return trip last month Day 6 (6 December 2012) After all this arduous walking and climbing of steps I stopped at one of the river restaurants for a LBL, which was quite pricey at Baht 69 (Baht 58 at the Aussie Bar)! Virtually all the river restaurants were closed, presumably due to it being low season. This restaurant was open though and the price of a LBL hadn’t changed, so no Thai style hiking the prices when there are less customers. It was from this restaurant that I previously took some pics of river life however since then they have built a bamboo bridge across the river so the ferry service has ceased. The_Munchmaster
Update from return trip last month Day 6 (6 December 2012) On the way home I stopped in at the Icon Klub, which is not your typical Luang Prabang bar, quite an arty sort of place really. Must have been good though as I stayed for 11 Black Sodas and the bill of Kip 440,000 (Baht 1,700) was by far my biggest of the trip. Unfortunately the Icon Klub was closed although it was to reopen on 14 July.
