"We are prisoners of our phones and tablets and all our digital crap. I am. You are. We all are. We get sucked into these stupid machines, see reality through them. Instead of empowering us, we insist on giving them our power. We even attach our feelings to them. It's sad."

That guy's an idiot.

I tend to agree with Jai Rai to a certain extent, some people do seem to be slaves to their mobiles, tablets etc, i refuse to spend more than 2 minutes on a single phone call if I can help it, if someone has something to say lets discuss over dinner far more sociable. Never have and never will use Facebook or twitter, but i do use LINKEDIN which is more of a professional network. But I did grow up during the first phases on the "Digital Revolution" and have evolved with it ever since, even my chosen carrer path is now very computer intensive (Control Automation Systems in Oil & Gas) and I have had to keep on top of current technology or I would be on the scrap heap by now or working in some dead end service industry job on minimum wage.Far from being a Luddite I actually embrace technology but have also seen the Positive and Negative effects it has had on society depending upon ones demographic region. 30 years ago the UK was one of the Leading edge countries in Engineering now I have seen the shift towards India and China so the UK's loss has bocme the Sub Continents and Asia's gain not to Mention South Korea which has now overtaken Japan.I confess that I carry my iPad everywhere with me but mainly for work reasons, even though I am still in Bangkok I am actually managing a department in Manchester England as well as being responsible for Mumbai operations, I will move back to UK for a few months at the end of this month. The project is so large that not one company could handle it so it is broken up into packages, we have contractors In Houston, UK, Paris, Madrid, Milan, Mumbai, Thailand, Singapore, Korea, Japan and also In Kingdom Saudi so I need to be in contact across numerous time zones so email or SKYPE conference calls are essential to my day to day business activities, plus all documentation is online now so I can review and comment in real time rather than wait for a DHL package to arrive. It depends upon how technology is utilised, if used as a tool for business purposes to promote productivity I totally disagree with the author of the article, but if only used for Facebook, Twitter and online forums then he does have a point, it's a double edge sword and not a bad article to start a discussion on.

So is a person who makes such a post without offering reason or argument to why they have such an opinion of the article.

Do you just post one line shit all the time in order to get your post count up?

Now maybe if you were to explain your opinion on why you feel "That Guys an Idiot" I may understand where you are coming from .

Mr C,

Could you please explain why you feel the guy who wrote the article is a Moron?

As I explained in my initial post technology plays a large part in my life, as, from my understanding of some of your previous posts, it also does in yours, so in this respect we both probably consider the author of the artricle a Moron with respect to what advancement in what technology has brought to the world when applied to Business, Industry and even your field.

But the point the author was making is the fact that people are now becoming slaves to technology, especially through social networking sites and twitter etc, which I do tend to agree with. I see it a lot in Thailand a group of friends out for a meal together and rather than socialising face to face over dinner, as I used to do and still do, they all seem to have their noses glued to their smartphones or Tablets and ignoring the very people they are out with. Why do people arrange to have dinner together if they are not going to communicate as a social group?

I agree that the article was not very clear into why the author came to his conclusion, but I do know that you are intelligent enough to read the aricle and understand the point he was trying to make. Now if you disagree with his opion and can make a valid argument as to why you disagree that society on a whole (especially the youth) are not becoming vitual slaves to technology then I will quite happily read your comments and listen to your opinion, but to call the author a Moron without giving a valid reason is not IMHO a valid argument.

We don't have to agree with each other, but as I stated it's not a bad article to have a discussion on. For the record I was not calling you a Moron peronally, we have met once in BKK with mutual BM friends and I do happen to know that you are a well educated intellectual individual which is the reason why I expected you to give a reason why you think the author is a Moron. I hope you understand where I am coming from now.

I think the author of the article makes some excellent points. Sure, not everyone who owns a digital mobile phone/smartphone/tablet etc is a slave, but some people most definately are. Like most, I have a smartphone, and find it handy mainly to check the weather, stockmarket, keep in touch - especially with people living abroad - as well as work related and other calls.

What I find most annoying, is people half way through a real face to face conversation all of a sudden pull out the phone to reply to a text, tweet or whatever, totally disengaging from the face to face conversation they are having, mid sentence. I find it rude and annoying. It was the main reason I hesitated so long to buy a smart phone, I didn't want to be one of these people who, when distracted by the thing switches off and "fakes" his way through the remaining face to face conversation in order to reply, like, retweet or whatever to an online conversation.

Like a lot, dare I say most people, I find a mobile phone "essential" in my line of work (often on call at odd hours etc) and they definately make life a lot easier that having to stay home in case the phone rang, like my Dad did when he was working. Some people are a slave to their devices, and I for one am looking forward to leaving the thing at home this upcoming trip.... 4 sleeps to go :)

Mr C,

Sure. Technology in just about all it's forms has made this planet better and safer than anything since the sun turned on.

Writting

Maps

Printing

Steam power

Radio

x-ray

Telephone

Antibiotics

Rocketry

Computers

Internet

Cell phone

Social Media

Smart phone

All of these (in about that order) have allowed us to advance. And just about every one of these was repudiated as an end of civilisation as we know it by nay sayers that can only exist and keep existing because of the advances before them. Just about every generation is frightened by the advances the next generation embraces.

So, yes, I call him a moron for that. No less because with out the internet that powers it all.... none of us would have even ever heard of him.

(How many of you recall parents yelling at their sisters to get off the phone? Sisters didn't... and the world went on just fine.)
