Ship Inn Closed

Recommended Posts

With the prices being touted around for businesses on SC these days there is little a non P4P place of suitable size can do if leases are up and go-go money wants to take over.

You might be able to charge Bt185 for a beer or Bt1500 BF but you cannot charge Bt895 for a pub meal.

It will never become a gogo - no new licenses will be issued to a new venue.....bar beer maybe but never a gogo

A couple of articles on this from recent Stickman columns,

5 May 13

"Just around the corner from Soi Cowboy and beyond the Old Dutch, the long-running single-shophouse British pub, The Ship Inn, has closed. I guess the last pint was pulled around Songkran. The Ship Inn was a funny old place that despite being around forever you seldom heard anyone mention. With The Old Dutch, Bradman's Bistro, the Queen Victoria and Clubhouse all near within a stone's throw, perhaps the competition was too much? A couple of months back The Ship Inn installed a glass frontage, enclosing the small outdoor area. Signs were erected, stating that a visa service for India was available. Presumably someone in the bar was acting as a middleman with the Indian visa centre just around the corner, a strange service to offer and one that didn't last. The shophouse next door has been taken over and word is that the two shophouses combined will become a short time hotel. Given the way the industry is going with short-time liaisons now the norm, this is no surprise."

"The reasons for the demise of The Ship Inn in Sukhumvit soi 23 have become clear. The photography shop next door to The Ship Inn on Sukhumvit soi 23 was taken over by the owners of the Corner Bar at the other end of Cowboy. The Ship Inn took over the computers and photograph equipment from the shop and continued to offer the service. The photo shop goes back a lot further than The Ship, and has an upstairs above The Ship. The Ships Inn's extractor fans went from the kitchen through their ceiling, up a wall and through the roof. The new owners told them that they couldn't have the extractor fan going up the wall, so they effectively lost their kitchen. Without the ability to serve food the pub was no longer viable and that was that!"

Ah, that makes sense. Odd that they didn't say anything about having to close when I was there in March. It must have happened suddenly.

I much preferred the Ship Inn to the Queen Vic - better food, cheaper and quiet. It seemed to have loyal customers, too. I ran into the same people there often enough. The Old Dutch went to hell long ago. Now the food is just average and the upstairs looks like a rubbish dump. S Tsow got food poisoning there, which doesn't surprise me. Bradman's is all right, but not cheap. The Ship was the best value for the money of the lot of them. The Fish & Chip is decent enough, but I haven't figured out their hours. It used to stay open until about 2 AM. Now I've seen it closed as early as 9 PM. (If the owner isn't around, the pies' crust may taste a bit like cardboard boxes.)

Never tried it, but it often has a line of people waiting to order them.

p.s. Old geezers may remember when that was an official Playboy club. :)
