Well some other tips than, these are a bit older, so you might have seen them already:

Das Leben Der Anderen: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Das_Leben_der_Anderen

About life in the former DDR

Der Baader Meinhoff Komplex: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Der_Baader_Meinhof_Komplex

About the Rote Armee Faktion

And a good Dutch movie:

De Heineken Ontvoering: http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/De_Heineken_Ontvoering

About the kidnapping of Dutch beer tycoon Freddy Heineken in the '80ties. It was good enough that they are currently in the proces of making a Hollywood remake of this one :p

I generally like movies with a historic base, Fantasy, Sci-Fi and good drama.

Just finished watching Hannibal (a tv series about Hannibal from silence of the lambs fame) very good with good dialogue. And the Newsroom also very good with strong dialogue.

In the past few months/over the years I watched: Gods and Generals, Gettysburg, North and South (miniseries) (did I mention I like historical drama?). Motorcycle diaries also very good movie. etc etc etc. The Hobbit off course!

I am definately not a fan of all of the superhero crap we get to see here in the theaters. And I really like German movies these days, probably because they have so much history to make movies about. Unfortunately even though we have a rich history ourselves, the Dutch never really make a lot of productions about it, it is probably because it costs to much to produce. The KRO (a Dutch public broadcaster) made a few nice historical drama series but then stopped again, citing costs.

Waerth, here are some good movies/docus I enjoyed recently;

Armadillo - a Danish unit in Afghanistan

No Man's land - war drama set in the Bosnian war

Restrepo - 2010 docu about Afghan war, excellent movie

The invisible war - docu about rape in(side) the US Forces

Gunner Palace - Iraq conflict

Taxi to the dark side - examines the USA's policy on torture and interrogation in general, specifically the CIA's use of torture and their research into sensory deprivation (still need to watch this myself)

Das Boot - the German TV show about WWII subs, a classic movie/series

Tae Guk Gi - Korean movie about Korean conflict in 50's (difficult to find English sub version)

Besides the series; Game of Thrones (3 seasons) and Homeland (2 seasons)
