Ambassador Hotel Guest-Friendly?

Recommended Posts

When I first started coming to Bangkok, I stayed at the Ambassador Hotel, on Suk Soi 11. I was attending a seminar that was held there.

At that time, they were not guest-friendly, charging a 600 baht joiner fee.

It looks as though I will again be attending a seminar at the Ambassador, and I'm getting mixed signals on whether or not they still charge a fee.

On the one hand, they now appear on a few lists of guest-friendly hotels. Upon questioning (more below), one of those list maintainers qualifies it, saying they're guest-friendly if you pay for a Twin/Double room, and charge the joiner fee if you get a Single room.

On the other hand, a recent TripAdvisor review reports seeing a sign advertising a 1000 baht joiner fee.

On the gripping hand, when I queried, another guest-friendly list maintainer attempted to query the hotel, twice, and got no response at all from them. He's dropping them from his list of guest-friendly hotels.

As it stands right now, I'm seriously considering staying at a different hotel and commuting in for the seminar.

Does anyone here have any information one way or the other?

Thanks, everyone.

Not guest-friendly. A friend worked there until recently. The drill is that uniformed security guards intercept resident + new friend just inside the Soi 11 entrance. Joiner fee is taken and (should be) logged in a notebook. In practice, unlogged joiner fees are shared out between the guards and night reception staff. One night an Indian resident paid joiner fee and went upstairs with his plat du nuit, only to re-appear about 20 minutes later demanding a refund. His 'lady' had turned out to be a 'man', so he wanted his money back. As the receptionist said 'Joiner is joiner Sir; no refund'. No idea what the current joiner fee is

guys guys its a scam as clearly outlined by checkbin, but there are well known work arounds if insisting to still sleep at such residents i.e. book a double room & insist you are checking in for 2 persons even you in fact are only yourself at checkin time (thus you will be logged as a low chance scam target lol). of course even if you stagger home at 5am with the most obvious street whore keep insisting its your gf & threat to see the manager if the scam is tried on!!!

old habits die hard so best of course to boycut the place totally lol!

BTW does staying at ambassador give u free entry (normally 300bt) to the disco in the basement (name escapes me)?

There are hundreds of hotels in Bangkok. Just get another one! Ambassador Hotel does come up on some links as being guest friendly.

(The Ruamchitt Plaza Hotel is nearby. Sort of one stop shopping with the bar in the basement!)

Many other GF hotels even cheaper than Ambassador available in Nana area.

Have fun.

Agreed that there are lots of guest-friendly hotels in the vicinity.

I normally stay at Royal President on Suk Soi 15.

If I was not attending the seminar at the Ambassador, it would be a no-brainer, and I would already have made the Royal President reservation. As it stands, the seminar-negotiated Ambassador rates are higher than Royal President, but not that much higher, until you add in the 1000 baht joiner fee (according to a TripAdvisor review). Add in that fee, and you are talking about a substantial difference.

The seminar convenes at 9 AM every morning in the convention center part of the hotel, and goes all day, with a lunch break. It used to be an easy walk from Royal President, through the Ambassador car park, to the Ambassador's back door. You can't do that any more: you have to take a LONG walk (Soi 15 to Suk, Suk to Soi 11, Soi 11 to Ambassador), or the longer walk down the back sois.

I checked Grand President rates yesterday, and they're higher than the Ambassador, for rooms not as nice as either Ambassador or Royal President.

And I think I'm just going to do it the easy way.
