Syria Thread

There's a key point that is getting very little air play.

The Syrian rebels HATE the idea of Assad surrendering his chemical weapons and putting them under international control.

I wonder why? Could it be because, if Assad actually does this, when the NEXT chemical weapon attack happens, everyone on the planet will know that it WASN'T Assad or his people who did it?

All gets a tad complicated.

If the rebels did such. They would first have to obtain the chemicals.

Then place on artillery shell.

Then obtain the correct artillery piece.

Then get that weaponized shell to the actual artillery piece.

Arm the artillery piece.

Aim the artillery piece.

And know how to fire the artillery piece.

Securing Syria's Weapons May Require US Troops

The White House and the Pentagon have repeatedly ruled out "boots on the ground" in Syria, but Defense Department officials were less certain Thursday on whether U.S. military personnel might be sent to help secure or destroy Syria's chemical weapons. :doah:

Pentagon Press Secretary George Little gave a vague answer when asked if U.S. troops were prepared to assist should an international agreement allow Russia to take control of the tons of chemical weapons believed to be in the stockpiles of President Bashar al-Assad.

"I'm not going to speculate on who may or may not be participating in a process that may or may not take place," Little said. "We've got to see where the process goes" before the U.S. military considers involvement, he said.

This is as confusing as tomato soup recipes. Either they have ties to All Qaida groups or they don't.

"BEIRUT -- Prosecutors in southern Turkey have alleged that Syrian rebel groups were seeking to buy materials that could be used to produce highly toxic sarin gas, Turkish media reported Friday.

An indictment issued in the southern city of Adana alleged that a Syrian national identified as Hytham Qassap, 35, was in Turkey trying to procure chemical materials for a pair of well-known Islamist rebel blocs, Al Nusra Front and the Ahrar al-Sham Brigades, the reports said. Washington has designated Al Nusra Front as a terrorist group linked to Al Qaeda.

Neither group is affiliated with the U.S.-backed Free Syrian Army."

"...............According to the document al-Nusra Front and Ahrar al-Sham group had tried to buy large amounts of sarin nerve gas and chemical substances used in manufacturing poisonous materials.

The prosecution believes that the suspects have links to Syrian groups close to Al-Qaeda and their leaders and were buying chemical materials from Turkey to send into Syria."

definitely a lot less stressfull for you if you stop telling me what to do altogether !

Nothing is better for stress than Turkish style cream of tomato soup.

http://turkishfood.about.com/od/SoupsSalads/r/Turkish-Style-Cream-Of-Tomato-Soup.htm

Ingredients:

  • 4 cups/about 1 liter of tomato juice
  • 3 tbsp. butter or margarine
  • 2 tbsp. flour
  • 2 tsp. salt, more or less to taste
  • 1/4 tsp. black pepper, more or less to taste
  • 1 cup whole milk
  • grated mozzarella or Turkish kashar cheese for garnish

Preparation:

  1. First, melt the butter or margarine in a covered saucepan. Add the flour and stir until bubbly. Be careful not to let the flour darken or burn.

  2. Next, add the tomato juice slowly while stirring or whisking constantly with a wire whip. Once the tomato juice comes to a gentle boil, add the salt and pepper and stir until combined.

  3. Reduce the heat and cover the pan. Let the soup simmer gently for about 10 minutes. Remove the cover and stir in the milk. Continue to stir until the soup heats all the way through and begins to steam. Be careful not to let the soup boil. Add more milk if needed to get your desired consistency.

  4. When the soup is heated all the way through, adjust the salt and pepper to your taste. Ladle it into your serving bowls. Put a generous pinch of grated cheese on top of each bowl and serve immediately with bread.

  5. If you want a richer soup, substitute the milk with half and half, or add 2 tablespoons of heavy cream to the mixture. When I'm watching my weight, I often use skim milk in place of the whole milk, and reduce the amount of butter and flour slightly.

  6. You can also add common Turkish spices to the soup, such as oregano, mint and hot pepper flakes for a different twist. For tangier, redder soup use water in place the milk to thin the soup.

And know how to fire the artillery piece.

In the links above the tomato soup recipe one of the stories shows mortar shells.

Although I really don't think they could hold enough to kill as many people as are claimed to have died they are certainly very simple to load and fire.

Have you seen anywhere anything certain as to what was used to fire or launch the gas?

Seems that this is actually about Iran according to this:

President Obama declared that the United States is still prepared to act militarily to stop Iran from developing nuclear weapons despite the decision to pursue a diplomatic deal and not strike Syria over its alleged use of chemical weapons.

He also acknowledged that his approach to the Syria crisis has been uneven, but defended it as producing the right results.

Obama spoke in an interview broadcast Sunday on ABC’s “This Week With George Stephanopoulos,†taped Friday before the United States and Russia agreed on a plan to bring Syrian chemical weapons under international control in order to avoid military strikes.

But Obama said Iran should not interpret the diplomatic response — coming after he threatened to use strikes — as suggesting that the United States wouldn’t attack Iran to stop the development of nuclear weapons.
