Formula 1 world champion Sebastian Vettel has criticised plans to award double points for the final race of the season from 2014.

The winning driver of next year's Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will earn 50 points instead of 25 under the proposals. :shakehead

"This is absurd and punishes those who have worked hard for a whole season," said the 26-year-old, who won the final nine races in 2013.

"Drivers, fans and experts are horrified."

Other teams and drivers are yet to comment on the plans following a meeting of the F1 Strategy Group and the Formula One Commission in Paris on Monday.

Red Bull driver Vettel would have lost the 2012 title to Fernando Alonso if such rules had been in place and is far from happy.

"I value the old traditions in Formula 1 and do not understand this new rule," he told German newspaper Sport Bild. "Imagine, in the last Bundesliga match of the season there was suddenly double points."

The double-points plan has been designed to increase the chances of keeping alive the battle for the title to the final Grand Prix of the season after Vettel won the 2013 championship with three races to spare.

Other proposals include a budget cap from 2015 and allowing drivers to choose their own racing number - from two to 99 - for their entire F1 racing career.

"If the new system had been in place for the last two decades, three world titles would have been won by a driver other than that year's eventual world champion.

"In 2012, Fernando Alonso would have beaten Sebastian Vettel; in 2008, Felipe Massa would have denied Lewis Hamilton; and in 2003 Kimi Raikkonen would have edged out Michael Schumacher."

"Although teams in motor racing series are generally allocated numbers, for many years Mansell has been associated with the number 5. This began when he joined Williams in 1985 and was allocated car number 5. For the first four races of the 1985 season, both Williams cars had white numbers, but from a distance the numerals "5" and "6" resembled each other. As a consequence, it was decided to give Mansell's car a red number to make it more distinctive. While this was initially just for recognition, BBC F1 commentator Murray Walker began describing Mansell's car as "Red Five", leading to Mansell retaining the red coloured number throughout his first spell at Williams. On his return to the team in 1991, Williams had retained the number 5 car, allowing Mansell to race as "Red Five" once again. After his departure to Indy Car Racing in 1993 to drive for Newman/Haas, he again retained the red number 5. So associated with the red 5 is Mansell that, in 2004, he purchased a yacht from Sunseeker, one of his long time sponsors, which he named Red 5."
