Protesters will not obstruct election

Anti-government protests will not do anything to obstruct the advance voting this Sunday or the February 2 election, rally spokesman Akanat Promphan said Friday.

However, they would continue their gatherings and demonstrations to convey their messages of opposing the idea of having election before political reform.

The decision was made after rally leader Suthep Thaugsuban met with core leaders of the seven rally sites last night.

Suthep, who earlier said the protesters would block the election, today appeared to have softened his stance. This was echoed in the statement by Akanat, who added that the rally supporters would still conduct their activities, as they want to underline that these are being conducted peacefully.

Protesters rally, tell officials to go home

Anti-government protesters on Friday afternoon surrounded the Phaya Thai District Office where local officials were making preparations for Sunday's advance voting and the Feb 2 general election

Thaworn Senniam, a former Democrat Party MP, said the People's Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) wanted the district officials to cancel their preparations for the polls.

"We ask you civil servants to stop what you're doing within 20 minutes and return home, or we'll lock the gates," Mr Thaworn said through a loudspeaker truck in front of the district office.

That sounds like interfering with the election to me.

Breaking news ...

A man was caught by protest guards after he allegedly tossed a pingpong bomb into the protest site at Lat Phrao Friday evening.

No protester was injured after an explosion at the protest site from an explosive device, thought to be pingppong bomb, tossed from the Lat Phra flyover at about 5.15 p.m.

However, protest guards gave chase and captured the suspect, riding on a motorcycle.

The suspect was identified as Pongsawat Rattanasri, a resident of Pathum Thani province. He was taken to a guards’ shelter in Chatuchak park for questioning before he is to be handed over to the police.

They should have just locked Suthep up weeks ago. Name me another developed or developing country where this shit is tolerated....

How about Thailand under the Democrats, where the red shirts were allowed to shut down much of the city (including the business district) for more than two months?

Over 100 active and retired irrigation officials join protests

Former director-general of Irrigation Department Pramote Maiklad and deputy permanent secretary for agriculture and cooperatives Lersak Riewtrakulpaibul led about 100 retired and active irrigation officials to take to the protest stage at Pathumwan Friday night.

The group was one of the largest to take to the stage to openly defy the government. Earlier, hundreds of local administration officials, including headmen and kamnan, from Nakhon Si Thammarat and Surat Thani took to the stage at the Democracy Monument in defiance of the government.

Mr Pramote told the audience at Pathumwan intersection that they were mostly irrigation officials responsible for water management and development projects and they shared the cause of the People’s Democratic Reform Committee.

He said the group wanted reform to be implemented before an election and they wanted to see bureaucratic reform so the bureaucracy will be strengthened.

“We will fight side-by-side with the great mass of people until we achieve the victory,†announced Mr Pramote.

Same should have applied there. Not singling out either side here. Neither's behaviour should have been tolerated. But this one was premeditated and promoted long before it even happened.

True, the red shirt protests were totally spontaneous, by coincidence a lot of people from the north happened to be shopping at the same time in Siam square, decided hey since we are all here... It all caught Thaksin quite by surprise, I'm sure. ;-)
