Senior officer files complaint against protest guards

A senior police officer has filed a complaint against a group of more than 10 People’s Democratic Reform Committee (PDRC) guards who allegedly attacked him on Friday.

Pol Col Nopporn Suppapat, 52, a deputy commander of Royal Thai Police’s Appeal and Supreme Court Case Inspection Division, lodged a complaint with Pathumwan police yesterday, accusing the security guards of attacking him on Friday evening.

The police officer said he was walking under the skywalk at Siam Square after leaving his office at the Royal Thai Police headquarters about 5pm, heading towards Ratchaprasong intersection, the site of one of the PDRC’s major rallies.

He said a man in his forties who identified himself as a PDRC guard approached him and asked to conduct a search.

Pol Col Nopporn said he was wearing a jacket with a police logo and the guard questioned whether he really was a police officer. He said he was, but he was off duty and just wanted to walk past the rally site so he could catch a taxi to Thon Buri.

The police officer said he refused to be searched, so the guard attacked him by sticking a Taser-like electric shocking weapon in his chest and then repeatedly punching him in the nose, causing it to bleed.

Pol Col Nopporn said a group of more than 10 guards then joined in the attack, beating him until he collapsed to the floor.

He claimed a group of protesters then forced him to wear a whistle around his neck before driving him out of the area on a motorbike. This bike was followed by another group of motorcycles.

Pol Col Nopporn said he jumped off the motorcycle as it passed Srapathum Palace, where he saw a police officer standing guard.

He tried to seek the officer’s help but the guards caught him again and returned him to the Ratchaprasong rally site, where they questioned him before allowing him to go to hospital. Police are reviewing CCTV footage of the incident.

Assaulting a police officer is usually a very, very bad idea, no matter where on the planet you are, no matter what your excuse was.
