khunsanuk
Hi, "said foreigners can earn $200 to sell their passport and then report it stolen" That's not a lot of money, really. Doesn't even seem worth the hassle of getting a new passport (which likely will not be free either). Sanuk!

Mekong
It is $228 for a British one, but everyone knows a British Passport is more valuable than an American one.
gene1944
About year 2000, I was offered an American Passport by a document vendor on Khao San Road for $1,000. No idea what price might be now.

Flashermac
Stolen Austrian passport used by Iranian teenage migrant Kuala Lumpur - One of the two passengers who boarded the missing Malaysia Airlines plane on stolen passports was an Iranian man seeking to relocate to Germany, Malaysian police said Tuesday. Pouria Nour Mohammad Mehrdad, 19, was travelling on an Austrian passport earlier declared stolen in Thailand, police Inspector General Khalid Abu Bakar said. Based on consultation with foreign intelligence counterparts, he did not appear to be a member of any terrorist organisation, and was apparently trying to migrate to Germany, Khalid said. http://www.nationmultimedia.com/national/Stolen-Austrian-passport-used-by-Iranian-teenage-m-30228929.html
Specialist
There have been a couple of reports that passenger smartphones are "still active". Without more data, that could be that the networks in question haven't noticed that the phones are no longer talking to the network. Or it could be that the phones are in fact intact, in range of a cell tower, and their batteries are still up. Which has some serious implications.
