It now seems as if everyone is getting in on the act, first it was Apple TV then Google Chromecast and now Amazon Fire. Being an Apple man myself I have the Apple TV a device not much bigger than a cigarette packet which plugs into a spare HDMI input of TV.

But what does it do I hear people ask?

If set up correctly basically everything, Amazingly out here in rural Vietnam I have a 48 Mbps Internet connection, of course youtube is the major "Free" Channel (I like free) but since I have a VPN I can also watch UK TV shows from BBC, ITV, CH4, Sky etc at £2.99 / Month it is cheaper than a satellite subscription, I could also watch TV shows form USA, EU and Australasia if I was a masochist which I am not.

What I like about Apple is the "Mirror" facility whereby one can get content via iPhone, iPad or Macbook and feed it through the Apple TV and see on big screen, Mrs Mekong pushes a few buttons at 6AM and is watching / listening to Thai Breakfast News at 6 AM whilst cooking my breakfast from her iPhone "Mirrored" to the TV, I usually get home from work just before 6PM and am greeted by the Thai National Anthem. :p

Also I don't need to carry my data, all my pirated movies, music and TV Series (I love torrents) reside on my server in Bangkok, a few keystrokes on my iPhone and YES total access to my Porn collection haha.

If one is Geo static then IPTV would not hold ones interest, but if nomadic as I am it is a godsend.

Hi,

Not seen the point in this. I get all my TV from torrents, letting me watch when I want.

Torrents are good we agree on that but a $99 box that allows one to watch Thai TV when out In the sticks in Nam, not me but the wife, a contented wife makes my life easy, she streams Thai TV via her iPhone direct to the big screen and does not nag when I go to Bia Hoi after work for a few litres of beer as one does ( 70 cents for 2 litres haha).

As I stated in my initial post IPTV is of no use to a Geo Statical person but for nomads like me it is a godsend

"Amazingly out here in rural Vietnam I have a 48 Mbps Internet connection" -- That is amazing! I thought speed like that is only possible with fiber optics, not something one would imagine finding in rural Vietnam.

zzzz,

Many things about this country surprise me, the fibre optic backbone being one of them, the 3G network is also top notch. I must admit up until 6 months ago when I first came here I was rather ignorant about VN, not that I had paid much attention to the place in the past. Ha Noi is closer to Bangkok than it is to Saigon, 1:45 and 1:55 respectively by air, it just takes me 3 hours to get to Ha Noi.

It sort of reminds me of Thailand 20 years ago price wise, 4 of us stop off at "Bia Hoi" after work, 2 hours of drinking beer and chewing the shit and change out of $4.00, in Bangkok I am paying 90 THB for a Pack of Smokes about $3.00 here I can get a carton 10 packs for 70,000 VND about $3.50, that works.

Also more relaxed here than the Middle East, Mrs Mekong can come and go as she likes, in fact she is here now, 10 weeks at a time in the Middle East solo or for 20% less money work in Asia and your partner is with you? I prefer the later. It is songkran next weekend and I cannot travel, my passport is in with the party for Work Permit and TRC (Temporary Residence Card) and I don't give a shit, missing one Songkran as opposed to getting TRC in VN is a no brainer, I pay tax in one ASEAN country they cannot touch me at home in Thailand, and it will get better 2015 when ASEAN borders come down.

With a VN TRC I can fly into BKK and use the ASEAN immigration channels, next year no stamps in the passport , Sorted.

The only reason I can put up with Rural VN is the Internet, I could be anywhere in the world to be honest
