One of my colleagues changed her name when she was 56 years old. She'd had a nice, easy-to-pronounce Thai name, but she changed it to something long and unpronounceable. I gave up and just called her by her old name.

 

However, a male student changed his name and I could see why. His first name was Patpong, and he got tired of all the jokes made about it.

 

 

p.s. My sister worked with a lot of African Americans with "exotic" names. One day she heard them complaining about being called Lakeisha, Kakawana, Devone etc. She asked why they didn't change their names. They said, "We can't do that. Our parents gave them to us."
