>Thailand was never colonized in the literal sense ONLY because it suited the British and French to have a buffer zone between their spheres of influence.

Did the British and the French have a buffer state in Africa and South America or elsewhere at all?

Why did they need to have such a state? I think it's a waste really.

Cool post!

I agree that thais do not fare too well in integrating other cultures. I just met a thai restaurant owner in Paris where he's lived for the last 20 years. he used broken english thru the conversation and my friend confirmed to me that his english beats his french, no contest. here in SF, I also find that laotians and cambodians are less insulated in their own culture than thais. very interesting subject.....

I am told that Hanoi has not yet been completely subsumed - I am planning to visit as part of my China adventure in September.

you are kidding yourself. Vietnamese are looking for the tourist dollar a lot more avidly than thais and Sanuk is not part of their vocabulary. Head off for the mountains quick for a warmer experience!

P127, you really are a ray of sunshine smile.gif

A colleague told me that Vietnam is, as you say, becoming more commercialised, but that the Mainland Chinese seem to consider it a patriotic duty to empty the pockets of foreign tourists. A Chinese friend told me that they had three prices : one for foreigners, one for locals, and one for her. Even though she was raised in Shanghai, they saw that her daughter was Eurasian (more correctly, 'Australasian') and charged her a price halfway between the local price and the foreign tourist price. I guess its just their way of saying 'You earn Aussie dollars - Chinese people dont'.

I fouind the Thais differed in terms of their willingness to exploit the humble tourist : tuk-tuk drivers in Bangkok and some of the baht-bus guys in Pattaya being the worst. They literally drove me into the arms of my BG smile.gif

We all know that the tourist traps anywhere will take the unwary to the cleaners. Just take a drive out to your nearest airport and order a Coke and a hamburger .....

GTG: British and French influence in South America was ALMOST nonexistent (and if you're thinking Belize, that's still North America). French Guyana is the only place on the mainland that I can even think of offhand. The Spanish and Portuguese had it all wrapped up, and besides the geographical considereations were QUITE different from SE Asia, in africa, too. For whatever reason, it DID suit their purposes HERE, an unpleasant fact that Thais prefer to sweep under the rug.

I really wish you would read a post carefully before opening your mouth, the post was an indirect stab at exactly what you stated without actually stating it!

"No electricity, no hospitals, no bottled water, ok?"

Hey Frenchie,

I have seen such villages when I was travelling around Thailand, thus as a tourist.

I have a problem with farangs living here: mainly because of their way of living here:some have a drinking problem, some suffer of nostalgia, some look down on Thai women and men alike, most don`t speak 10 words of thai.

Similar to that Thai Paris restaurant owner.

I will travel to Nong Mek, Udon Province late June with my gf and a lady from the same Amphur who`s husband went to Europe for 3 months. There are no hotels and I am thrilled to eat and sleep with (humble?) Thai people. Hope there will be no farangs in sight to spoil the experience.

Maybe I will move out of Chumpon becaue I don`t like this farang attitude???

"I was asked by a farang friend whether I'd stay in their country after I got my degree. I almost became angry. Why did I want to live in their country ?"

"Angry"? Over that? Jai roon mak maakwink.gif

So, what you're saying is that you had no real interest in your host country. You simply went there to pillage their education system for your own self-interest. That's an interesting parallel with what you frequently accuse us of doing!

As a matter of interest, the enquiry was actually a polite one - a way of asking whether you had begun to really like their country or not. So, you were flirting with rudeness in your answer.
