SpiceMan
I want to know more about Thai Lotto but could not find much info on the web. Wikipedia says only: Thailand Lottery first started in the time of King Rama V, drawn into an international show organized in King's birthday festival. In 1917, a lottery drawing was organized in addition to finance Thailand's entrance into World War I. After that, a third lottery was organized to finance Thai Red Cross charity operating cost in 1932. In 1934 in addition to finance the shortfall in government income. In 1939, the power of lottery procedure was shifted to the Ministry of Finance, which is currently held on the 1st and 16th of every month. How much is the big prize? Is the lottery legitimate? Is it open to foreigners?

Flashermac
The drawing is held twice a month - on the 15th and 30th. Tickets are sold in pairs. There are maybe ten or twelve sets for each number. The top prize is 2 million baht, so with a double ticket you'd get 4 million baht. There are smaller prizes as well, ranging from 100,000 baht down to 1,000 baht for matching the last two numbers. http://www.thailotto...ery-ticket.html http://www.thailotto...ze-amounts.html I have never figured it all out, since certain numbers are considered lucky and bring more than others. Thus you will see pairs of tickets sold from 120 baht down to 90 baht or so, depending on how "lucky" their number is. Also, some folks like to buy the entire set for a number, which lessens your chances but results in a huge win if you hit the jackpot. I'd like to find more information on the national lottery myself, since the Thais seem to have made an art of buying tickets. I bought tickets regularly for a while, but quit when I never managed to hit more than the last two digits a few times. However, a friend bought a ticket just for the hell of it ... and got a 100,000 baht win. There is also an underground lottery, not exactly legal. It seems to be a Chinese thing and is big in Yawarat. Thaksin made it legal when he was running the show, but it was made illegal after he got the boot, since it competes with the national lottery. The national lottery seems to be honestly run, but at times various political poobahs have been accused of skimming funds off the lottery's earnings. Flashermac
No order given to adjust lottery price : junta The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) on Monday denied ordering the Government Lottery Office (GLO) to adjust price of lottery tickets. NCPO deputy spokesman Col Winthai Suvari said the NCPO had not issued any order to reduce the highprices of lottery tickets sold in the market to a more reasonable level as had been reported. Col Winthai said no special instructions had been issued on the matter though he was aware of the public's dissatisfaction at the wide gap between the original price set by the office and the prices at which the tickets were sold by brokers and vendors. He said the junta had merely asked the lottery office to consider the issue, but no conclusions had yet been reached. As such, reports about a conclusion being reached was untrue and intended to lead the public into misunderstanding the military junta, he said. http://www.nationmul...a-30236365.html
Boo Radley
Interestingly enough, I've had quite a few Thais show surprise when they find out there's a lottery in my country, too. And many other countries, for that matter. They seem to think they invented the lottery and are the only country that has it.
The_Munchmaster
Thais think they invented everything, that they know better than everyone else and that problems in their own country are the fault of foreigners. The Thai lottery pays out about £40,000 on a £2 ticket, the UK lottery pays out about £3,000,000 on a £2 ticket. OK the odds on winning the Thai lottery may be higher but.................... khunsanuk
Hi, "OK the odds on winning the Thai lottery may be higher but...................." Actually, the odds of the Thai lottery are pretty crap. You need at least the last 2 digits right to get anything. Sanuk!
Flashermac
The Thai lottery right now is 6 digits. There is talk to changing it to 7. If that happens, your odds of hitting the top prize will be about the same as they are for being struck by a meteorite. Like most Thais, my Mrs used to buy a ticket every two weeks. She finally came to her senses and she she'd decided to stop "throwing away money". But others still dream.

Coss
NZ lotto is 6 digits and another option involving a 7th. The odds are what they are, but on average someone wins the 6 digit lotto every week (when someone doesn't, is more than balanced by multiple people winning some weeks). So NZ is 4.5 million people, the odds must be something about 1 in 4.5 million.
