How Many Legal Pharmacy Medicines Are Fake?

I mentioned in another post about pharmacy medicines being counterfeit.

There was a story on the tele about the counterfeit industry.

We all know about the wrist watches and handbags. Well, some here anyway (the handbags).

But this tele story went in depth about just about every prescription drug out there. From heart medicine to cosmetics to enhancement medicine.

All packaging is exactly the same. The pills all look exactly the same.

But random retail purchases were taken to laboratories and most showed lead and other carcinogenics.

Most it was guessed were manufactured in India and China.

So how is one to to really know which is fake and which is real?

If I shop at the local Thai pharmacy on Sukhumvit in Bangkok or 2nd Road in Pattaya - am I getting the real thing?

I have posted about this here before, but here it is again.

Back when we were doing the AIDS study in 2009 we had a lot of down time in the lab so a few one of the Docs sent a team up and down Suk and bought a slew of the meds available from the street vendors and we ran them through the machines.

Not one of them tested legit. Not one. Most were milk and/or sugar powder.

I mistakenly stated "most".

It should have stated many or some.

Don't wish to get some of you all worked up.

The "blue" pills I purchased on Sukhumvit at various pharmacies all worked for me. Whether generic India or China - or the "real" thing.

the generic actually worked better for me while viagra (it looked real, felt real & had a real bad hangover effect!) were the worst albeit surely aggressive active ingredients.

on the street? well as with the clothes etc u luck may wary...

as to pharmacies...sure they may stock generic brands or in fact less and less stock any sex drugs these days, but I dont see why most drugs would be fake or totally non effective vs. what they sell them as :)

anyway im sure the next thing we know there will be stricter pharma controls in LOS !!

I used to buy Viagra from a tourist pharmacy on Suk Soi 11. Real thing, zero problems.

When I'm in town, I currently buy asthma maintenance meds, precautionary antibiotics, and electrolyte packets from the pharmacy on the north side of Suk, just west of Soi 15. They're good people. Zero problems, good prices. (My asthma is such that I will be in DEEP trouble in a few days - as in ER run deep trouble - if I'm not properly maintenance medicated.)

I've always used the 'BOOTS' pharmacies when purchasing meds in BKK and PTY, they're a UK based multi national company with an excellent reputation, I would be amazed if any of their meds were dodgy in any way.
