Flashermac
The government of Thailand urged Israel on Thursday to relocate the 4,000 Thai nationals currently employed in southern Israel near the Gaza border, according to a report by AFP. The demand comes a day after a Thai national was killed by shrapnel from a mortar shell launched by Hamas in Gaza. The mortar exploded in a greenhouse and a shrapnel fragment fatally wounded the man in his neck. The Thai man became the third civilian fatality in Israel since Operation Protective Edge began. “The Thai Embassy has contacted the Israeli Foreign Ministry and employers to ask them to relocate 4,000 Thai workers in agriculture estates near the Gaza strip immediately and unconditionally to safe areas 10 to 20 kilometers away,†AFP quoted Thailand's Foreign Ministry Spokesman Sek Wannamethee as telling reporters in Bangkok. "Abandoning the agricultural areas now will lead to huge economic damage and to a shortage of produce," said Yair Farjoun, head of the Ashkelon Coast Regional Council. He expressed sorrow over the death of the worker, saying that open areas were the workplace of farmers. “We feel deep sadness by the death of the migrant worker,†Farjoun said. “We were prepared for the possibility that there would be loss of life. We send our condolences to the victim’s family and continue to give our backing to the IDF and the security forces.†http://www.jpost.com/Operation-Protective-Edge/Thailand-demands-Israel-relocate-Thai-workers-from-near-Gaza-368717
jon46
Once again, the loss of lives (over 1,000 vs. less than 40) and the destruction on one side vs. minor damage on the other speak volumes! The people in Gaza can not leave as the borders are sealed by Israel and Egypt! Haven't Israel learned anything from previous campaigns that this type of warfare give rise to more extremists and more future violence. It won't be too long when rockets will hit Ben Gurion airport. What will Israel do then? Bomb and turn Gaza to rubble?
Flashermac
So what is Israel supposed to do? Hamas could care less how many Palestinians die. In fact, the more that die, the more the outrage helps them ... which is the Catch 22 for Israel.
baa99
Israel likes the current status. It allows them to seize land and drive Palestinians off the land. It insures that Jews remain the absolute majority in Israel. It allows them to practice apartheid. Israel's policy of collective punishment insures the survival of Hamas. Flashermac
Then why doesn't Hamas prevail in the West Bank?
robaus
It’s the children..the chidren’s deaths and suffering that moves me most. Picture one of your most loved ones as the face of one of those blooded Gazan toddlers. You have to have a heart of stone not to feel sorrow and disbelief as to how this could be happening right on Europe’s doorstep with the seeming indifference other than mere words of European, Australian and American leaders. While heaven and earth are being moved to ensure the recovery of the bodies of innocents murdered on MH17 caught in another regional conflict, sanctions increased, UN resolutions, leaders threatened with boycotts. But the kids in Gaza are Palestinians, so they don’t count. It’s a weird world.
baa99
Then why doesn't Hamas prevail in the West Bank? I guess you missed the large demonstrations in the West Bank against the Israeli bombing of a UN school. The PNA treated Gaza like a poor relation. PNA corruption in Gaza provided an opening to Hamas. Remember Hamas provided social services, like free clinics, while PNA officials grabbed the aid funds. That's how Hamas was able to win a general election.
Flashermac
About 10% of the Palestinians are Christians. Hamas attacked the Christians in Gaza and destroyed the churches. I doubt if that made them very popular with their own minority. The Middle East is a mess, all of it. Seems folks have forgotten about Syria already. Plenty of children died there too. baa99
... and Israel treats its Arab citizens poorly.
Flashermac
Every country in the area treats its minorities like crap. But the Hamas are treating their own people that way.
