cavanami
No surprise here.... Thai military-dominated legislature to appoint PM http://www.trust.org/item/20140819100041-isbz8/ Thailand's military-dominated legislature will nominate a prime minister this week, members of the national assembly said on Tuesday, a move that looks set to consolidate the army's hold on power almost 100 days since it wrested control of the country. The National Legislative Assembly (NLA) is likely to nominate General Prayuth Chan-ocha, the army chief who led the May 22 coup after months of street protests, assembly members told Reuters. NLA president Pornpetch Wichitcholchai told reporters that an interim prime minister would be appointed on Thursday. "We will nominate a prime minister on August 21. Meeting members will be the ones to vote," Pornpetch said, referring to the 197-member, military-dominated national assembly...
Flashermac
Just following the accepted Thai (military) practice. The much praised PM Anand Panyarachun was appointed the first time following a military coup, the second after HM stepped in the stop violence between the military and civilian protesters. "He was effective in initiating economic and political reforms, one of which was the drafting of Thailand's "Peoples' Constitution", which was promulgated in 1997." (Wikipedia) I imagine the junta wants to try to duplicate Ananda's popularity. Lots of luck.

JaiRai
No corruption or fighting like the old governments, because now we control it all. NLA and PM. Not to mention the media, police, and even Academia. Good time to be a general. Bad time not to be a yes man.
robaus
It would help the government's credibility in their fight against corruption if they themselves declared their assets. NCPO not required to declare assets Published: 18 Aug 2014 There is no legal requirement for members of the National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) to declare their assets and liabilities to the National Anti-Corruption Commission, said NACC secretary-general Sansern Polchiak. Mr Sansern said this in responding to an interview in wihch Gen Paiboon Khumchaya, an assistant army chief and an NCPO member in charge of legal and judicial affairs, said that NCPO members were ready to declare their assets and liabilities to the NACC. There is no law requiring NCPO members to do so, he said. NCPO members can submit a declaration if they wish to show their sincerity, but their declarations will not be made public. http://www.bangkokpost.com/most-recent/427399/ncpo-not-required-to-declare-assets

Thai junta chief tipped to become PM http://news.yahoo.com/thai-junta-chief-tipped-become-pm-073122947.html Thailand's coup leader is expected to be picked as prime minister by the kingdom's new army-dominated national assembly, junta sources said Wednesday, cementing the military's hold on power in the politically turbulent nation. Army Chief Prayut Chan-O-Cha is likely to be the sole candidate for the premiership when the 197-strong appointed assembly convenes on Thursday to select a new leader for the Southeast Asian country, the sources told AFP. "It was difficult to find people to become prime minister other than General Prayut. If it's not him, who else should it be?" one junta official said on condition of anonymity. "He staged a coup. He has to be responsible for solving all the problems by himself. By becoming prime minister, he will have full power," the official added...
