unit731
OK. This is my spare/spare computer. Not used much. Came with XP. I did Windows Upgrade Advisor. And it stated that this machine will work with Windows 7. 150GB hard drive 2GB RAM. Anyways. I purchased a supposedly "new" full copy of Windows 7 retail package. Ebay/USA. But opened. Loaded Windows 7 - new or full install not upgrade - and all worked fine after a few updates. Then about a week later - upon turn on - the dreaded Invalid Product Code. Telephoned Microsoft. Told that the product code is valid. But from my viewpoint it may be valid but not necessarily on my computer. Turned on/of a few days - and the Invalid Product Code dialog box came up again. I went to other computer to look up the Microsoft CS telephone number. Then back to the old machine and the dialog box changed. This dialog box from Microsoft provided a telephone number to call - automated. And a series of 9 boxes - with 5 number each. And below there was nine empty boxes. I was asked to provide the 5 numbers in each of the nine boxes - then I was provided 5 numbers each for the nine empty boxes. New or different numbers. Click NEXT And a dialog box came up and stated that my copy of Windows 7 was valid. All automated. Back up. The first thing I did was file a complaint with PayPal. After one week I was refunded from eBay seller my payment for this copy of Windows 7. Now I baffled.
Coss
My experiences with Windows are similar, and I think, par for the course. But then I use Mac.

unit731
With 2GB Windows 7 will run like crap! Works fine for this backup desktop. Windows 7 system requirements LINK If you want to run Windows 7 on your PC, here's what it takes: 1 gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor 1 gigabyte (GB) RAM (32-bit) or 2 GB RAM (64-bit) 16 GB available hard disk space (32-bit) or 20 GB (64-bit) DirectX 9 graphics device with WDDM 1.0 or higher driver But the requirements are not the point here. Still baffled.
zzzz
I've gotten the invalid key messages on several of my computers after a reinstall of the OS. I've given up on Microsoft and have been switching over to Ubuntu.

Sales increased 13% ( I read someplace) with the introduction of Windows 8.
Specialist
I am not surprised about the Apple sales spiking up. Windows 8 is, not to put too fine an edge on it, a HUGE piece of sh*t. The 8.1 upgrade made it marginally usable, but it is still nowhere near as good as Windows 7, or XP. I have a Windows 8 notebook. I have a Windows XP desktop and a Windows XP notebook. I'm not in a rush, but they are probably both going to become Linux machines.
