“God Is Not A Magician, With A Magic Wand: Pope Francis Schools Creationists

In an exciting declaration, Pope Francis I stated that God should not seen as a “magician with a magic wand,†while unveiling a statue of his predecessor Pope Benedict XVI at the Pontifical Academy of Sciences. Pope Francis also stated that evolution and the Big Bang theory are both true and not incompatible with the church’s views on the origins of the universe and life.

“When we read about Creation in Genesis, we run the risk of imagining God was a magician, with a magic wand able to do everything. But that is not so,†Francis said, according to the Independent. Francis continued by stating that God “created human beings and let them develop according to the internal laws that he gave to each one so they would reach their fulfillment.â€

“The Big Bang, which today we hold to be the origin of the world, does not contradict the intervention of the divine creator but, rather, requires it,†Francis explained. â€Evolution in nature is not inconsistent with the notion of creation, because evolution requires the creation of beings that evolve.â€

While the pope’s understanding of the origins of life still requires a divine force (rather than a scientific one), his views are a leap forward for the Catholic Church. Pope Francis is not the first pope to welcome these two scientific theories. However, the Catholic Church has a long reputation of being at odds with science, and Pope Francis’ declaration is looked at as “trying to reduce the emotion of dispute or presumed disputes†between the church and science.

A few centuries ago, he might have been burnt at the stake or saying this!

Steven Hawkins and other scientists proposed theories that fit the facts and allow us to interpret and predict how the world works. This benefits mankind. Pope Francis is a mystic telling impossible stories about virgin births and resurrection. None of which benefits mankind. It just helps to part the gullible from their money.

Coming from the minority (Less than 9% in the UK population) brought up as a Catholic, here is my take on it.

Science or any field of excellence and Religion do not mix, if one is pre occupied in (what in my consideration) wasting ones time reading a book of fables then one is not learning. How has mankind evolved today by reading the Book of Genesis or the Book of Revelations from the old transcripts or by studying Newton's 3 Laws of motion, Charles Law and Boyles Law to understand the 3 rules of thermodynamics, I know what stood me in good steed.

I renounced religion (especially Christianity) when I was old enough to escape from my Fathers control at the age of 16 and pursued an education and career in Engineering which in itself is a field of science. Even now some 35 years later this is one topic my father and I still disagree on, he tells me "Son my Prayers have been answered and you have a good life" I am like "Fark off Dad, stop being stupid I gave up your mumbo jumbo crap years ago got an education and a life" sort of if you are happy with your beliefs then that is your choice but please don't use your beliefs as the reason why am successful in life (OK an Opinion I know)

Don't get me wrong I am not anti religion, I realise that many people need a crutch to hang on to in order to get through life, but not me, everyone to their own so to speak. What I dislike is the religious people trying force their opinions on me, I would class myself as irreligious, agnostic or aethiest means one disagrees with a point where as irreligious means one does not even entertain the thought so nothing to disagree with.

A creator capable of designing the universe would need to be extremely complex himself so would require some explanation of how he came to be. Saying "God lit the big bang" doesn't explain anything, it just raises more questions. Professor Hawking's explanation assumes a simpler state at the beginning so should be more satisfying.

I don't really care what people believe. Best way to start an argument is to start talking religion.

Professor Hawking's explanation assumes a simpler state at the beginning so should be more satisfying.

I have no idea how it all started, but the idea that nothing created everything is simply too far out for me. Maybe the Buddhists are right and the universe simply has aways existed in one form or another.

Seems pointless to spend time researching how the universe began because then the obvious question would be " well, what happened before that ? " and so on Ad Infinitum. Many of these theories such as parallel universes etc. can`t be proved or even tested and so fall into the category of religion rather than science.
