buffalo_bill
Gentlemen I woke up just recently due to noise from the TV and found a person , female, stretched out on the sofa watching a guy interviewed whose name according the person on the sofa is " Jonas " . The guy spoke Thai in perfection as far as I can judge and according to sofa is even German and SUPERSTAR . I would feel particularly honoured about fellow countrymen advancing to Thai Superstars in such a demanding cultural ambience . Any further clarification would be welcome . We now go hab breakfast at Viva Soi 10 as previously mentioned and I shall have another final go at my 50/50 ham/Salami dream . Over to you

ALHOLK
Jonas (Anderson) is a Swedish singer. He moved to Thailand wiith his parents when he was young. He lived i n Isaan for a while and learned to speak Thai fluently and sing Thai songs. He is quite popular in Thailand where he aparently lives. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jonas_Anderson
Flashermac
He isn't really that great a singer, but the fact that a Farang could sing in Thai and Issan Lao instantly made him a "star". His sister was a singer too, if I remember right. (At least they said she was his sister.) I also recall that he was supposed to have been involved with the despicable Children of God cult when he was young. Jonas was hot stuff about 15 or 16 years ago, but I hadn't heard anything about him in years. I didn't even know he was still around. p.s. Board old timers may remember that restaurant that "Santos" ran around 2001 or so. Jonas sang there a few times.

Flashermac
Jonas's Thai was very rusty when he came back, but since then his fluency has pretty much returned. Learning it as a young boy made a big difference. I remember my wife coming home one afternoon at my old compound years ago and asking who the "little blonde girl" was. She said she spoke perfect Thai with a native speaker accent. I told her it was our American neighbour's daughter. We had kids there from the US, Japan, the Netherlands, and Hungary, plus the landlady's Thai children. Since they mostly had Thai nannies, their common language was Thai. I used to listen to them chattering away in envy. The kids gradually lose the language when they move away, but it's easy enough for them to get it back ... far easier than learning it as an adult. Santos did a runner, with all sorts of creditors after him. Apparently, he'd sold a 50% interest in his go-go bar to at least six different people! The law finally caught up with him, hiding somewhere in Cambodia (I think). He ran a good bar in Nana. If he'd done it honestly, he'd have surely made money anyway. The bar was always packed with customers and he had some gorgeous dancers working there. The restaurant did well too, and I especially remember the Mexican buffet ... one of the best I've seen in LOS.

waerth
Jonas is still performing. When I played comedy bumped into him and his "sister" regularly. Very nice guy and down to earth!
YimSiam
Was always jealous of Jonas - of course, didn't want to be him and he had sort of creepy stage style - but I'll take waerth at his word and assume he's a good guy. Still, jealous.
