Latest deadline ditched as police wait for special personnel in bid to arrest Phra Dhammachayo

THE HIGH-PROFILE operation to arrest Phra Dhammachayo, the fugitive former abbot who has been ensconced in Dhammakaya Temple for months, has been aborted due to “lack of preparednessâ€, deputy national police chief Pol General Srivara Ransibrahamakul said yesterday.

Following a five-hour meeting to prepare for the raid that was scheduled for today, the latest deadline for the monk to surrender, Srivara said police still needed forensic science and technology personnel to ensure transparency if and when the case goes to court. The personnel would record evidence for the court in the event of resistance or obstruction during the raid.

Srivara declined to confirm if the operation would be conducted this week, saying it depended on the right timing. The court-issued search warrant authorising the raid is valid until December 16.

Dhammakaya temple asks protection from court

Dhammakaya temple today asked for protection of its former abbot, Phra Dhammachayo, from the Criminal Court, after learning that police will search the temple to arrest him.

The request for protection was sought by the temple’s lawyer this morning. Its lawyer told reporters at the Criminal Court that he was designated to lodge complaint and sought protection after rumour was spread that several thousands of police and officials from the Department of Special Investigation (DSI) will enter the temple today after they have been granted warrant from the court to search the temple for the former abbot.

The lawyer said the temple requested the Criminal Court to abort the search warrant.

It was not immediately known which court issued the search warrant for the DSI, the Pathum Thani Provincial Court or the Criminal Court.

A big police raid mounted at the home of Wat Dhammakaya spokesman Ong-art Thammanitha found the wanted man was not there.

A large number of reporters and TV crews were on hand as Klong Luang police, armed with both a search warrant and an arrest warrant, could not find their man.

The only man home was Ong-art's father who said that his son did not live at the address and had not been there for a month. The house on 200 square wah by the klong is in Klong 1 sub-district of Klong Luang, Pathum Thani.

The warrants were issued Thursday and Friday.

The family lawyer was present to make sure that the search of the house was conducted in a legal manner. He had been instructed to be there by the father who seemed to be aware that the raiding party were on their way.

Ong-art is wanted for breaking the law under Article 116 of the criminal code.

So I'm curious. Are search and arrest warrants a matter of public knowledge?
