Falling Trees, Utility Pole Kill Motorist At Chit Lom

I had to remove a tree on my property in Vientiane, it was a magnificent old growth thing, 40~50 metres ish. I was dead against it, being a Kiwi greenie (relatively). Then I saw a similar one that fell over up the road, almost no root ball. So the Lao folk were right, it could fall on the house, so it had to go. Shame really.

We had a beautiful oak in our yard at home, about 5 foot in diameter and estimated to be at least 150 years old. Unfortunately, it was also hollow. One winter an ice storm snapped it in two. It was far enough away to miss the house, but it took out many smaller trees in the yard.

 

About a block away, another large oak was toppled ... and fell on a nearby house, landing on the bedroom and right across the bed. Fortunately, the owner was away visiting her sister, or else she'd have been a pancake.
