Hi,

"But Afrikaans? I've never even heard of Dutch being taught here."

Afrikaans is not Dutch. While Afrikaans started out as Dutch, it is now a separate language. I will be able to understand a lot / most, but I certainly can't speak it.

Sanuk!

easy to read as well !

Years ago I had Dutch neighbours, who bought some canned goods that turned out to be from South Africa. The labels were in Afrikaans, and I remember how they were fascinated with some of the words, since they seemed so archaic and odd. :)

The neighbour worked at the UN, and one day he told me he'd been greeted at the UN by an older Asian man in fluent Dutch. The man was Indonesian, and he explained that when he was a boy before independence the schools were taught in Dutch.
