Street vendors will be banned from pavements and roads on Khao San Road, Bangkok's top tourist destination, and two other locations in the city, starting from Aug 1, Bangkok deputy governor Sakoltee Phattiyakul said Tuesday.

The permanent shops behind all the street vendors are sort of blocked out and probably miss a lot of trade,so maybe its pressure from them to get rid of the street traders :dunno:

I still remember the night I arrived in Bangkok on my very first trip. I flew into Don Mueang, caught a taxi, and was staying at the Ambassador Hotel on Suk Soi 11.

We turned onto Sukhumvit Road, and it suddenly hit me: At midnight, this city was ALIVE!, in a way I'd never seen before ANYWHERE.

The street vendors were a noticeable part of that.

Over the ensuing years, I gradually realized that the street vendors were not really the active commerce I'd thought initially, but, for a long time, it was fun to see what they were offering. I got tired of it as the porn and adult products and fake drugs started crowding out the more interesting stuff.

At the same time, every time I hit town, landing shortly before midnight, getting to the hotel around 1 AM or so, Sukhumvit Road is still alive.

It is being said that the current government wishes to make BKK a clean city alike Singapore. Although there might be long way to go I believe the writing is on the wall if you look for example what is happening to Soi11 becoming a meaningless alley with one new condo next to another.

Comment like this never fail to amuse me there are literally over 1,000 Soi 11’s in Bangkok yet somehow expected to guess which one you are on about.
