I survived building the Death Railway

Recommended Posts

I met a survivor of the Bataan Death March once. He could tell some stories. I'm glad I was much too young and safely in North America to have to worry about WWII. Some of my grandmother's family in Europe unfortunately weren't. (They ended up as Soviet slave laborers.)  The 20th century will go down in history as one of the most barbaric in supposedly modern times.

I had a colleague years ago who was a child in Bangkok during WWII. She told me the Japanese raced their vehicles down the middle of the street and everyone had to get out of their way. Thais resented them but were afraid to say anything about them, even though the soldiers were supposed to be on their good behaviour in the city. (She said the Japanese camped in Buddhist temples, realising the Allies would be reluctant to bomb them.)
