Roundup of airport escapees begins

The government vows to take legal action against those who fled quarantine after returning on a flight to Thailand on Friday night and failed to report themselves by deadline last evening.

It has demanded the 158 people who arrived at Suvarnabhumi airport enter 14-day state quarantine, in line with the Emergency Decree issued on April 2. Many passengers defied the order, triggering public outrage amid concerns about the spread of Covid-19 from imported cases.

Taweesilp Visanuyothin, spokesman for the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), said 152 people who defied the quarantine order had until 6pm yesterday to report to authorities or face legal action under the Emergency Decree.

By mid-evening last night, 134 returnees had reported nationwide. As for the rest, local police have been ordered to arrest them.

Violators of the announcement under the Emergency Decree can be imprisoned for two years, fined up to 20,000 baht, or both. Violation of the Communicable Disease Act can result in one year imprisonment, a fine of up to 100,000 baht, or both.

He said the government has asked Thai citizens abroad to delay travel home from April 2-15 and imposed state quarantine for all returnees to prevent imported cases.

Dr Taweesilp said Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha voiced concerns about the commotion on Friday night and stressed it should not happen again.

"The arrival of Thai and foreign nationals in the past two weeks has contributed to an increase of cases because some don't self-isolate. That's why the prime minister has asked them to delay travel," he said.

He said the government has information about the returnees and could track them down, but they are advised to contact the Emergency Operation Centre at Suvarnabhumi airport or the Damrongdhama Centre in their provinces and bring their families along if contact has been made.

It is reported that out of the 158 returnees, 103 had arrived from Japan, 11 from Qatar and 44 from Singapore. Six of them agreed to be sent for quarantine at a hotel in Bangkok. "We don't want to take actions or punish anyone. We are concerned and we want them to report themselves," he said. "The public health and security authorities are working not for themselves but for the entire nation," he added.

The CCSA spokesman said several groups of Thais who already have permission to return will have to comply with quarantine upon arrival. These groups include the Thai AFS students returning gradually from the US and those who attended religious functions in Indonesia.

Doctor Say:

"What we know is primarily the coronavirus causes respiratory failure. So when it spreads to the lungs, it causes what we call a pneumonitis, where the lungs become very wet and waterlogged inside. So the normal mechanisms that keep fluid in the blood break down. The little membranes and tissues and the bases of the lungs become porous, and that allows fluid to leak in from the circulation into the lungs, almost like drowning.

One of the things we provide with ventilators is pressure, which pushes some of that fluid out and helps to keep the lungs open. So ... people become exhausted because the work of breathing is so great that they basically become exhausted and die.

So, if you imagine your lungs are normally like a nice, light sponge – light and easy to move. If you've ever pulled a sponge out of a bucket of water you'll know how heavy and wet can become. It's exactly the same thing – if your lungs are absolutely sodden, then it's very, very difficult to breathe.

What happens over time is people's levels of oxygen fall, the levels of carbon dioxide, which is a gas you normally breathe out, rise in the blood. That makes you even more drowsy – it has a narcotic effect. And then people will slowly develop worsening respiratory failure, and eventually they'll become unconscious and their breathing will get more shallow and they'll die."

Hepburn explained that is what death looks like without intervention – get a patient onto a ventilator and that slow, painful death is hopefully avoided. The problem as coronavirus spreads across the globe is access to ventilators.

And Hepburn explained that this isn't the only cause of death among patients suffering from coronavirus – he'd also seen patients die from "multi-organ failure", as the kidneys, lungs, liver and even circulation progressively shut down.

"We've also seen patients who develop a thing called a myocarditis. Often when they're starting to recover – the heart can become very adversely affected and they develop heart failure. That's been probably the leading cause of death in the Covid patients we've seen," he revealed.

As Channel 4 put it when tweeting out the clip: "If this description of what it's like to die from coronavirus doesn't make you stay home, nothing will."

Of note,

Boris is hospitalised, and statements are , "nothing to see here", "precautionary", etc etc ...

Trump has said he was tested three times, by my counting, 1st time "tested negative", 2nd time "had the Test" (no result reported), 3rd time "I was tested, I assume I don't have the virus, I can't pass it on to anyone..."

" Although (their) efficiancy in fighting COVID is far from certain (despite what Donald Trump says), the role of chloroquine phosphate a reliable end of life drug is beyond dispute. "

Ain´t that real good news Cav? Sort of stops your heart beating and consequently cures you from the virus for ever. Donald is right again. We send him a bottle I  propose.

The debate wasn't if the drug is useful, Trump was hailing it as a cureall of sorts. "reliable end of life drug', its not a cure. There is no cure yet. The gist is Trump has been irresponsible and outright lying in his talks to the people. That's why Governor Cuomo's press briefings are being televised nationally. No other governor. Because he 1. speaks plainly where we can understand. 2. Has empathy for people and 3. Speaks as much facts as possible but also speaks to what is actually happening.

Juxtapose with Trump and the only reason people are tuned in to Trump is because they have no choice, all the networks preempt their regular broadcasting. Which is normal for the president, any president, its not because he's a source of comfort and factual information.

...and then we have this...

WHO ignored Taiwan's warnings about coronavirus in December

World Health Organization ignored Taiwan's warnings about human-to-human transmission of coronavirus on Dec. 31

Taiwan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) on Tuesday (March 24) confirmed that it had warned the World Health Organization (WHO) about the human-to-human transmission of the Wuhan coronavirus (COVID-19) in December of last year.

Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokeswoman Hua Chunying (華春瑩) posted a tweet on Saturday (March 21) claiming that the Wuhan Municipal Health Commission had issued a notice about the COVID-19 outbreak on Dec. 31. However, in reality, the notice stated it "had not found any obvious human-to-human transmission."...
