Coss
BANGKOK, June 5 (Reuters) - Thailand had rescued 59 Rohingya refugees, including children, from an island who had been abandoned by people smugglers on an island close to the Malaysian border, police said on Sunday. The Rohingya - 31 men, 23 women, and five children - were found on Dong island in Satun province, which borders Malaysia, assistant national police chief Surachate Hakparn said in a statement. "The boat driver told them they had arrived in Malaysia and left them on the island a few days ago before being found," he said. The island is a tourist destination but not populated. Thailand has provided humanitarian assistance to the refugees, who have been detained for further questioning and will be prosecuted for entering Thailand illegally, Surachate added. ($1 = 34.30 baht) Reporting by Panarat Thepgumpanat Writing by Orathai Sriring; Editing by Raissa Kasolowsky https://www.reuters.com/world/asia-pacific/thai-police-rescue-59-rohingya-refugees-abandoned-southern-island-2022-06-05/ ______________ Idiocy - in that the refugees are getting humanitarian assistance and also prosecuted. I wonder at the relevance of the exchange rate in the article, perhaps they meant, 1 Rohingya = 34.30 baht.

They have not been prosecuted yet, once prosecution charges are placed, humanitarian assistance will stop. They are probably being questioned as witnesses as to help identify the smugglers as opposed to questioned about being illegal immigrants. Imagine the uproar if refugees were “rescued” and no humanitarian assistance was given. Remember, Thailand is not signed up to the 1951 Refugee Convention, am as such does not recognise them and they are treated as illegal immigrants.
