Guest
Repost from Planet Holiday If you are bored with visiting Temples and Shopping Centers in Bangkok, you may want to visit a museum for a change. The Royal Barges Museum is where some of the most prestigious and beautiful ornamental royal barges are preserved. The museum is located on Bangkok Noi Canal in Thonburi. Each royal barge is decorated after creatures of Thai and Indian mythology. The most famous barge in the museum is called "Suphanahong", or the "Royal Swan", and the bow of the boat is carved into the head of a 'hong' or sacred swan. The barge is 46-meters long and made from one piece of timber. It can only be used by the King of Thailand. Royal barges were once used in battles, but now only serve in ceremonial processions along the Chao Pharaya River. http://www.geocities.com/Royalbarge2001/
Boo Radley
Yes, the Royal barge procession is certainly worth looking out for and photographing. The boats and costumes are quite spectacular. It can get quite crowded along the river banks with everyone trying to catch a glimpse. http://live.nectec.or.th/royal_barge/991104-video.ram [ June 21, 2001: Message edited by: Boo Radley ]
tomc12
Visiting the Royal barges is kind of disappointing. The design on the prow of the boats is interesting as they are so ornate, but the rest is just basically long dusty red barges in a poorly lighted hangar.
