The whole tourist nightlife itself is "touched" by western civ. But yes, i think, from the little i read about it, it's about the guy, not Thailand. May be interesting to read thru this angle. What the Poster before probably meant regarding your comment, is that Houllebecq does not write about the "real" Thailand, the Land that we know, rather than a "Thailand" which serves a purpose in this book: To be a remote (but accessible for Westerners) "Mystery" Land, unspoiled, easy Sex, and all this. Although Houllebecq mentiones Places and Streets known to us, this is not to be ment as a description of the real Thailand, and not a description of "our" Thailand. Just my 2 Cents.
