10% Service Charges

Does anyone know with any real degree of certainty where this money goes? I want to know if it makes its way to the staff, or is appropriated by the house. I keep hearing different reports.

In the larger hotels it gets to the workers, and in five star places makes up a considerable portion of their monthly take home.

 

In other places it may get to the workers.

I know a worker in the spa in the Mariott at the river. The service charge goes to the hotel, :: , they only get 3% out if it. Because of the service charge the masseuses usually do not get tips anymore. I would say in the west the service charge gets to the staff. But in a country like LOS it can end up anywhere! Even in the BIG 5 STAR places.

Sorry, in the west the service charge always goes to the employer.

And sometime the tip as well. There was I believe a recent UK court case that found for the employer that if a credit card was used to pay the bill then the establishment was under no compulsion to pass on said tip to staff

Cash tips, at Bourbon Street, are divided by the bartender, into equal piles at the end of the shift, bartenders, waiters as well as kitchen staff participate.

If you want to give a particular person a tip don't put it in the envelope as this is usually shared amongst the staff. Simply put it in the person's hand.

I was told the same thing in BKK. Used to frequent a particular restaurant several times a week when working

there, and typically left a tip for the great service. I just left the baht in the folder the check came in. After a couple

of visits she asked if the money was for her. She told me to present it to her as such, otherwise the management

would just take it!

But what about the service charge? That 10% always niggled me so I tended not to leave a tip on top.
