<<of course at night in patong it is the haven for single men,but many couples are around and they have fun>>

Agree with this, whilst in 'our bar', we got friendly with a young couple(late 20's) from Manchester, they had no problem with the night scene in Patong and we had a lot of fun the four of us drinking and playing the nail in the wood game. They came to the bar every night telling us of there Phuket touring during the day.

I found phuket, Patong in particular to be an over devloped tourist area.

It is a classic example of unbridled greed and lack of civic resposibility.

A lot like Las Vegas, or Orlando. With that said I am glad I went there. I found lots of really nice places outside of patong. I found the biggest single issue in most any tourist area is touts and cab/tuktuk's. Without exception I saw more people scowel and complain about these issues than any nightlife factors. I saw many couples having a great time, and there is a large range of things to do. I think Thailand without its redlight reputation would be like vegas without gambling. or Orlando without micky. People expect and actualy choose these places for these core reasons. Now that doesnt mean they spend most of there time involved in these activities. But it does bring about a change from their hum drum lives. I still remeber watching couples having a great time on that one soi where all the katoey hang out. The where just having a great time, because this is "exotic" and you'd never see this in Omaha. There is definatly a time and place for the "adult" venues, and they will never be the do all see all of LOS. But to eliminate them would just make Thailand into Hawaii with a longer plane ride.

Well, you've really missed the entire point of Thailand. This is very obvious and quite dis-heartening to say the very least.

GTG,

I agree with you.

I first went to Phuket 6 years ago and stayed on the other side of the island from Patong. I was there a week before I even heard of what was going on there (Patong).

You can stay on Phuket and not see any of the "scene" there. ::

I have made more than 25 trips to Phuket since and find that there are so many places that you can go to be alone and relax in peace. ::

However, having said that I do feel that in the past two years the locals in Patong have become too pushy towards tourists. ::

You can't walk the main stip anymore without being hasseled by hawkers and that is sad. :(

I for one am happy with such statements. It's a pity Pukhet and other places in Thailand resemble Torremolinos, Malaga, Benidorm, Teneriffe and other similar places.

Unfortunately, tourism is creating an un-human environment for people to go on holiday. Try to understand that. Luckily there are still a few places left, but unspoiled? No.

Not directed at anyone in particular just a general statement. People may be critical of such expansion of areas, however it is a tiny bit selfish I think, the other day I was talking to a farang girl and we mentioned Thailand she said oh no I would much rather go to Vietnam much less commercialised, in effect what she was saying was that she would prefer to see MORE poverty, go and see the POOOOR people.

For all the posters that are bemoaning this AWFUL commercialisation stop being so selfish, do you not want them to have the same infrastructure as we do in the west, with safe water and ATM's do you not, what do you want, poverty for the Thai people, is that what you want.

You sound like a lot of the (scum) that inhabit Kao San road looking for that pooor people experience, wanting above all else to be a real novelty, and getting pissed off when you are just another bod.

And I, especially, want to take baht buses at 100 times the regular price (for Thais), eat sub-par Thai food for a premium, being bugged 24/7 by ten year old kids to buy chewing gum, hassled by katoeys on the beach on however I want a BJ to go with my beer...and...and...and.... :)

I've been a couple of times to Phuket and I must say that Patong Beach is a horrible, horrible place in my opinion.

I have a couple of friends that went to Kata on their honeymoon. When two weeks were up they claimed: "We will never set our foot in Thailand again"! It really really shouldn't be like that considering what a wonderful country this is!
