Viagra linked to epileptic fits

October 21 2002

By Judy Skatssoon

The erection drug Viagra has been linked to epileptic fits.

A range of side effects, from headaches to heart problems, have previously been attributed to Viagra.

Now, reporting in the British Medical Journal, specialists from the Department of Neurology at Israel's Wolfson Medical Centre describe the first two reported cases of patients who had epileptic seizures after using the drug. Neither had a history of epilepsy.

The first man, 63, had a seizure three hours after taking Viagra. Three months after being discharged from hospital, he took the drug again and had another fit four hours later.

The second case described in the journal involved a man, 54, who had a first seizure four-and-a-half hours after taking Viagra.

In both cases the fits occurred after the men had had sex.

The report concluded that it was highly unlikely the seizures were caused by a previously existing condition. "Using sildenafil (Viagra) and having seizures seem to be directly related," the specialists write.

They also called for more research into the effect nitric oxide had on epilepsy, because of the nitric oxide-enhancing effects of Viagra.

The report said four cases of patients having epileptic fits during clinical trials of Viagra were reported to the manufacturer Pfizer. However, no strong link was found between the seizures and the drug. AAP
