Guest
I the near future I may have to move to Thailand for a while. Is there such a thing as a 'Hobbies-Culture' I am interested in and play Brasilian Music(Samba). I also have a great interest in archaeology and aviation. I get the impression that Thailand is very much sex,and drugs and rock-n-roll(apologies to the late Ian Drury). I would imagine there may be a culture of personal interests and hobbies that stems from university life. Even then I am not sure. In the west we have people intested in stamps, antiques, collecting this and that. Various hobby clubs etc etc. I really get the feeling that this is something that does not exist in Thailand. The deal seems to be eat, bar, drink and sleep. If you are a Thai, lots of lap-lap- ie. sleep. A writers circle ? There seems to be plenty of novelists based in Thailand ! Mad Film Directors Circle ???? Night school for knitting ? Yeah I know someone knitted me !

Guest
Hiya Mr. GooseBay (been there )? To have Hobbies, you need money (in most cases anyway) and that would limit the ?Hobby? scene a bit in LoS to the few who can afford that luxury. But not to fear, one can find shops that cater to the hobbyist. I for one am quite the model geek, and before you fellow board members slam me for that let me say this? I build scale models for fun & for profit; building models for folks have actually funded some of my other ?hobby? exploits in LoS That said? I have found true hobby shops in Bangkok (so far haven?t found any, anywhere else)? other than the CEP& NEP type hobby shops many of us are familiar with. MBK has a nice little shop that an aviation enthusiast might like. They carry wall to wall collectable airliners in various scales at reasonable prices. They?re located on the second floor of MBK, just across from Chester?s Bar & Grill. I believe there?s another hobby shop in Siam Square as well. Those are the hobbies I?m into (models & aviation?comes with the territory), I?ve a few others, but all seem to circle around aviation. I?m reasonably sure you can find just about anything you?re interested in there, it just may take a bit of looking though. I?m also sure the expats here can fill you in even better with ?things to do? outside of the nightlife scene. Just keep watching your thread, they show up sometime HTH, Nakbin
Guest
Nakbin, I know the model shop you are talking about and I was very surprised to find it. They also have a web-page. Can't remember the address though. I like the night-life scene but I have never visited more than three weeks and I am sure after a while either I would get jaded or look and feel like a cliche. I have already tried to find Samba groups but they are mainly in Tokyo- of which there are many(Brazil has a large Japanese community. With Ankor Wat down the road so to speak I think there must be a fairly active archeaology group. At least trying to stop the art thieves taking off the stone heads and selling them in Bangkok shops ! As for antiques most of which I have seen is reproduction in JatuJak Market. Some clever reproduction but nevertheless 'repro'. The hill tribe knives look authentic until ones realises the 'old' knife has never been sharpened ! I think perhaps one can find anything in Bangkok....even writers and film directors' circles. I suppose it just takes a bit of looking !!! I hope the buffalo herdsman approves of this typing ???(real name Clint ?) Cheers, 'EL Greco'- the mad film director and amateur evreything !
