Hotels in Bangkok, Thailand.

Update.

Yes, there are many threads on this fine board about accommodation in Bangkok, Thailand.

Yet it might be time to update the bestest hotels. For the wandering farang tourist.

Bestest is defined by your parameters. From an un-airconditioned hostel to the Landmark on Sukhumvit.

How about a a name and address or location.

And of course price. In the spirit of internationalism - Baht, Euro, Pound, US Dollar, AUD, NZD, DKK, or any currency that you actually use.

In other words, where do you stay, amount, location, why . . . and any extra tidbits you can add about hotel and about location.

Sir ,

I do explicitly avoid the question what did finally happen to your Chinese alarm clock after unit gave up sending alarm signals as requested at the appropriate hour . You were planning to contact relevant Mainland authorities about the matter requesting clarification . An update would be in order .

Now hotels Bangkok .

After breaking up with Extremely Lovely Nok I found my riverside lodge a bit boring due to almost unsurmountable distance to somewhat more entertaining places like Soi 4 in general or Beergarden Soi 7. Which made me stay at the aforementioned Landmark a couple of times til these people were unable to offer me a extension of my stay due to a pointless convention nearby . I do not forgive this kind of behaviour and started looking for alternatives in the area . Which led me to " Serviced apartments " after consulting a website . I am now a fan of serviced apartments due to low prices at sort of hotel service but 5 times the space of any hotel room . Latest solution being Centre Point Soi 10 (?) . Currently asking about 70 Euros for a lovely garden room . Pam from Lao says its great and i agree .

I did already mention elsewhere the additional advantage of Lollipop Bar at the entrance of that same Soi offering a variety of Gins at most reasonabale pricing accompanied by excellent service by the staff of the property .

Think about it .

Royal President, Suk Soi 15.

I think it is somewhere in the USD 50-60/night range, for a 41 sq m room.

They've always treated me very well.

The Ambassador Hotel on Suk Soi 11 isn't bad, but I rather resent their attempt to bake me and my companion alive about a year ago. (I was in a room near the top of their tower. They lost the aircon Saturday evening. By 8 AM Sunday the room was quite literally uninhabitable. I was scheduled to move over to Royal President at about noon. I telephoned them, explained my situation, and asked if they could get me in early. The desk clerk said "Let me check", then came back a moment later and said "No problem, come on over." It took until almost 9 AM to haul everything downstairs, get checked out, and take the cab ride. (It would have been quicker, but I got stuck in the check-out line at the desk behind two Arabs who believed that yelling abuse at the desk clerks would make the hotel fix the aircon sooner.) Royal President moved heaven and earth to get me a room ready on very sudden very short notice, and I appreciate it.

For Mongering http://www.stablelodge.com is my fave, a solid performer in the 3 star range, close to Suk and in Soi 8. Pool.

Has been known to accept a travelling circus at 3 am, but does charge an extra fee for more than one companion.

"Too many people - one room" is what the desk clerk stated on my first trip to LOS."

The taxi driver, two gals, and one mate were standing at the elevator as I tried to get one room. Note: I was on limited budget back then.

"The taxi driver is not staying in room" I told the desk clerk. It was about 02:00 AM after a long flight.

We 4 did get the room. And the taxi driver was happy.

I went to Trip Advisor about the Stable Lodge.

A Mr. Flemming wrote the last review and according to his review - this hotel is under new management.

Assuming this is the same hotel.

Big rooms, privacy, balcony, view, washing machine, smoking are all elements essential to my enjoyment. I like something a bit different, a bit of character, when available. I have done very extensive research and sampling, and I venture that dozens of hotels have been tried and found wanting in some way. (Pretty much all of the below have also been found wanting in some way, but they somehow stay in the rotation, despite their apparent flaws - like the girls who share these rooms with me, I'm afraid.) In the order in which they come to mind:

Fraser Suites, soi 11

Davis - the big suites, or the village houses

S31

Column, soi 16

Panthip Suites, Sathorn (really below par room-wise, but has its strange charm)

Centre Point Pratunam - top floor Presidential suites

(and to have one from the major chains, if forced: Marriott Sukhumvit Park, Executive Apartments)

The price I've paid to establish my list of regulars is no minor price- girls, rooms, whatever! I feel like I've stayed virtually everywhere about 3 stars at least once...

Yep that's the one, mind you it's been 7 years since I last saw it and if the previous Danish management have moved on, then it's back in the wild again, Thailand, you get what you pay for.

A note on Trip Advisor, I know a few guest house owners in Laos, and mostly they are lovely and have good, pleasant establishments. But if you reference Tripadvisor, you get all these complaints posted about them and it is difficult to reconcile the complaints with reality. The truth is often, that good reviews don't get made and the 2% that are unsatisfied with everything, do make reviews.

However, back to the Stable Lodge, if they've got a new management, then perhaps it's time is over.

Fraser Suites, soi 11

Sir ,

I am as usual deeply touched by your words of endless wisdom , in particular your recommendation of Fraser Suites Soi 11as per yesterday 17:33 . It might have been the very same hour that I booked a premier room at the property for June the 1st and following . Price is 102 USD , and with breakfast 104 which gives us some idea how they rate their breakfast internally . The Premier room offers a huge area where you spend half the day to locate your glasses , the box with the Viagra and all sorts of other desperately wanted objects . Units have balconies to the Soi side and are so high up that it is dead quiet at any time of the day . Well not really .

For breakfast I recommend to take the in house tuk tuk shuttle , cross Sukh and enter the VISA restaurant Soi 8 .

After 4 nights I shall move to Center Point Soi 10 to enjoy the quiet Soi and a completely different ambience culminating in nocturnal Gin Tonics at Lollipop Bar discussing the problem if God exists and such .

Beakfast see above .

If a good value place near the airport (10 mins drive ) is required then I can recommend the Silver Gold Garden Suwannapum Airport Hotel .Located in Lat Krabang just off the main road next to a market and 3 or 4 7/11/Familly Mart shops rooms are adequate and less than 1000 bt ( cheaper to book in advance using a booking site.I thought turning up on the day with cash might elicit a discount, but the opposite seems to be the case :grinyes: ) ...

Breakfast? What's breakfast? Been there many many times, but seem never to have reached breakfast.

That place has giant rooms, multi-room suites - GIANT! - nice wooden floors, big balconies, washing machine, giant bed, it's excellent. I don't know what they expect guests to do with the large empty closet room, but someday I'll find a use for it. The drawback there is currently the weak room service choices - new restaurant is no good, I say.

And yes, it can be loud, even 20+ floors up - but with Q-bar closed that has improved for the moment. They are usually my arrival day choice - airport taxi to hotel, shower-beer-bourbon and fresh change of clothes, and then bars. (Though I am virtually alone, it seems to me, in having this lifestyle in that hotel - mainly Indian tourists these days, I'd say, but they look not askance at my 10 am stumble-in parties...) Value for money, absolutely. And you get a newspaper in the morning, usually - or can easily borrow your neighbors.
