Bangkok is ranked as the 62nd most expensive city to relocate to, says furnished apartment aggregator Nestpick.

Expats looking to relocate to the city can expect to shell out US$1,112 (35,700 baht) in their first month in the city, a figure which includes a $79 visa fee, $440 for rent, $17 for internet, $20 for phone, $37 for transport and $516 for food.

While Bangkok is one of the cheapest relocations worldwide, it's still more expensive than other cities in the region, including Kuala Lumpur, where expats can expect to spend $1,014.

Dubai is the most expensive relocation, based on a first-month living cost of $4,251.68, with high rent prices and visa fees. Cairo is the least expensive, based on a first-month living cost of $656.80, with cheap rent prices and affordable food and drink, according to Nestpick.

...

According to the study, New Zealand has the highest visa fees, at $2,159.46, and the longest visa processing time, at 381 days. San Francisco has the priciest rent, at $2379, while Bangalore has the cheapest, at $160.

These figures don't add up at all.

If you are "an expat" then expect to work in Central Business District and to live there also (based upon USD37 / THB1,190 PCM / THB55 per day transport costs) Please do tell where even a Studio is available for THB14,000 PCM a THB18 BTS/MTR ride away from the office.

Combined Internet / Phone USD37 / THB1,200 bollox full package with AIS is only THB800 and as for the USD516 / over THB500 per day on food christ knows where that figure comes from.

There is a lot of shit written in these surveys

Hi,

"Combined Internet / Phone USD37 / THB1,200 bollox full package with AIS is only THB800"

True has a similar packages, which even includes TrueVisions.

And yes, the rent figure is on the low side, unless you are including small studios.

Sanuk!

... or living away from downtown. Much cheaper housing in north Bangkok, but you're going to have a helluva time getting to work.

Food? No way I spend as much as 500 baht a day, but mainly I eat Thai meals. Eat Farang and you'll be lucky to get by on 500 baht a day.

But as I said Flash how does one commute from North Bangkok to work (Expat Environment) for USD 37 (THB1200) per month which is THB55 per day

4 years ago I was renting a small studio on Soi Suan Phlu near the old immigration office and that was THB18,000 (USD560) per month then, even from there it would be a struggle to commute much further than Sathorn for THB55 per day

I would say that one could have a western diet "AT HOME" not eating out. Chicken Breast and Pork Fillet are about THB180, another THB70 for some Veggies and that is THB250, a Subway for Lunch THB139, quite wasy to eat western for less than THB500 per day.

I am sure TRUE do a similar package to AIS ... I was quoting the one I now / use

Even the BTS or MRT would be at least 42 baht one way.

The only option would be to leave home very early and go by non-a/c bus. Not a lot of fun. :(

p.s. I used to go to Thammasat by river taxi, 14 baht each way. But that's because TU is on the river and I lived close to the river. It was fast too, no traffic jams on the river.

Not all expats are Europeans. There are plenty of "Expats" from countries where living anywhere with a roof and four walls would be considered a luxury. I guess if you average those against the white European manger class living in CBD condos at 100-200 k THB per month you might end up close to the number they arrived at. I'm guessing it's an AVERAGE?

There are school teachers living out here on the northern fringe teaching at private schools and unis, 4 or 5 to a large detached house which rents for about 20k a month so they do quite well at likely 5k or less all in.
