So I have a mate of mine who asked me are Thai dentists really any good?

He has a mouth full of holes, not cavities, holes, and could buy a new Tesla for what it would cost to fix in Farangland.

Yep, in Thailand mostly I've had great experiences, 2 shitty ones, back in Farangland 2 great experiences and mostly shitty ones so I'm sold on Thai dental care.

So ignoring my recommendation, of a place in Rama 9 area, he found on dental place in Sukhumvit, in the heart of Soi Arab area.

Seems quite ok by the website, cost would only cover 4 tyres, the following days will tell.

But as he's a complete newbie, and he claims, regularly, ZERO interest in nightlife!!!

I suggested he stay in Rama9, or Victory Monument. His budget is, well, budget, I know places there that charge by the day not the hour for the rate he wants, so together we found a bunch, preferring Vic Monument so he could get the SkyTrain to the Dental clinic easily.

He told me he was definitely NOT interested in night life, he doesn't drink, or do drugs, so, I believe him, letting him book which ever hotel he wants.

He has my number so he can call when he lands in case of problems. I suggested he gets the SkyTrain directly to his hotel, cheaper and safer than taxi and frankly easier to explain. He doesn't want to carry Farang $'s so he will get Baht from the airport ATM, easy. 10,000 baht will cover for the first few days at least! As hotel is prepaid he tells me.

So he lands, gets a little lost within the airport calls me a few times, finally after a long discussion he understands that he can't use a money exchange, as he didn't bring any money . . . and uses an airport ATM and gets out and tells me he has a hotel booked but not Victory Monument.

	Suk Soi 7

	WTF

That's a bit hard core. You'll be surrounded by nightlife

	Really? He asks me?

	Yeah, well enjoy

So next day dawns and I get a call, he can't find internet, it's 2024, not 2004, he's becoming the ultimate newbie.

	What ATM can I use?

	Well what are their names?

One is blue and one is another colour, very helpful. NAMES???

Oh! It dawns on him their is English on the machines. Thai Military Band and SCB.

Ok, you can use those, but get on the internet to see what your being charged? Didn't you get 10,000 out last night?

He doesn't telle where there 10,000 baht went

But tells me he has internet issues

He won't put a Thai Sim card in his phone because he might miss a call from Farangland. I point out he's unemployed, no wife, no family, just who will call? Take out the Farang Sim and out in a Thai one OR learn to use this magic thing called WiFi

	Anyway, that's not the problem.

	The hotel sucka, it's aweful.

Excellent! Move to Victory Monument, Rama 9 anywhere away from Sukhumvit and I'll feel safer for you.

No it's all good he tells. I've found a much better hotel.

	It's in Soi 5.

	The ultimate Newbie!

That is Arab and Nigeria central. Drug deals and whore all night! You will not last!

Oh! I noticed some African looking people, are they Nigerian? They seem very friendly.

	I am waiting for tomorrows call . . .

Yes, Hugh Hoy has returned to find his favorite "sandbox" of years gone by still alive, if not kicking. LOL Hugh tried for a few years to get back on Thai 360 in his original incarnation, but grew frustrated with trying to overcome some "glitch" of one kind or another. Then, I discovered Facebook. But it seems that the pantyhose-wearing censors over there can't handle my politically incorrect comments or graphics. Screw 'em.

I hit my 80th birthday last month, so like many of the original members of this board, "things have changed". I got wrapped up in a 25 year relationship with a great/"normal" Khmer "girl" and still manage "conjugal" activities with a former dancer at the Darling Bar from the 1980's (NOT the Tilac, but the Darling Bar that later became Rawhide). That doesn't mean that I don't enjoy hitting the bars these days. I go there for the eye candy and get my appetite up, but return to my old standby's to eat. No need blather on about how the "sanuk" scene has changed. We all know how and when and why.

I recognize a lot of the monikers here and can actually put names/faces to some. LOL

I've booked what will be my last trip to the LOS for Sept.-Oct. 2022. 8 weeks from now I will land in Phnom Penh and spend a few days before heading to Siem Reap. I'll make SR my base camp, as that is where Ms. Hoy resides. At some point during my 5+ weeks, I'll be heading over to BKK for up to a week. Sort of a last hurrah for this old man. If the stars are aligned correctly, maybe a few of us can get together for a lunch some place near the NEP and have walker races afterwards. LOL

You will often see Thailand referred to as LOS, "land of smiles" as a reference to the friendly happy-go-lucky nature of Thai people. As a generalisation this is true. We are a nation where we do know how to enjoy ourselves, and smile a lot compared to other nationalities. Of course we smile when we are happy, but we also tend to smile for a variety of negative emotions such as embarrassment, regret, confusion and even anger as well. Nationalities of other countries visiting Thailand for the first time, cannot see the differences in the smiles, and just assume everyone is happy all the time.

In any case from a marketing point of view, these few words "The land of smiles" and "Amazing Thailand" have done wonders for our tourist industry and the economy in general.

I've lived in Bangkok since 1983. I came here back in 1974 after I secretly married my Thai

sweet heart right out of college but it took me 9 years of struggling to get accepted before I

could come back. I'm a retired writer now. I just got my first book "Thai Lies" published on

Amazon last week. Before that I was a gemstone dealer in Bangkok.

...The book?....

Secretly married to his Thai girlfriend right out of college, an expat's nine year

struggle for acceptance. The journey bounces between the states and Europe and Cambodia

and all over Thailand. It's the only travel guide of the country you will ever enjoy reading with

stop offs in some secluded diving coves near Malaysia. The only foreigner crazy enough to

train and fight muay Thai boxing in the 70's. Just don't forget the sunscreen if you're around

the pool. It's over 500 pages. Out on Amazon January 1, 2013. And yeah, I'm still around,

living the Peter Pan fantasy.

So, I'm really looking forward to hearing how y'all made it over here, what you're doing to get by,

what exciting places you've been, what crazy predicaments you've been in, funny stories so I'll

feel better knowing I wasn't the only one who screwed up. All that good stuff.

This is a great forum and has been very informative for me. Thanks to all!

I am setting up a part-time office in BKK and will make the maiden voyage arriving July 20 and leaving 31st. I'm quite excited. I divorced 1 year ago after a long, hard marriage. American women at my age (49) are of no interest. I am attracted to Thai ladies at several levels, and of course have indulged online at TLL (bar girls are out for me). Now there are plenty of options to choose from, but I've got a 41 year old stunner that I've been chatting and Skyping with for only 2 weeks. She is pushing to get me off TLL and lock up all my time when I come to avoid other TGs. My guard has been up and I know she is not a bar girl. She is at home from work every evening and I've seen her daughters in the background when on Skype.

Is this normal for TGs who are over 30 single moms to be assertive and possessive with a potential farang BF? What should I be concerned about? I ask because it seems like there are repeated themes I've read in the the LOS. It is getting deep with her so I either cut and run or go with it and hopefully enjoy the ride.

It would also be good to catch up with some of you on a Friday night, and it might be a good excuse to break from the girl.
