Eight years ago there was nothing over there in Karen State. Just trees, a few roughly built cement buildings, and a long-running civil war which has left this area of Myanmar one of the poorest places on earth. But today, on this spot along the border with Thailand, a small city has emerged like a mirage. It is called Shwe Kokko, or Golden Raintree.

It is accused of being a city built on scams, home to a lucrative yet deadly nexus of fraud, money-laundering and human trafficking. The man behind it, She Zhijiang, is languishing in a Bangkok jail, awaiting extradition to China.

But Yatai, She Zhijiang's company which built the city, paints a very different vision of Shwe Kokko in its promotional videos – as a resort city, a safe holiday destination for Chinese tourists and haven for the super-rich.

The story of Shwe Kokko is also one of the unbridled ambition which has rippled out of China in the last two decades.

She Zhijiang dreamed of building this glittering city as his ticket out of the shadowy world of scams and gambling which he inhabited.

But by aiming so high he has drawn the attention of Beijing, which is now keen to stamp out the fraud operations along the Thai-Myanmar border which are increasingly targeting Chinese people.

A new self-drive tourism manual for ASEAN is now available, containing important details and need-to-know information on driving in each of the region’s member countries, as well as suggested touring routes.The self-drive guidebook is aimed at encouraging those tourists who would like to explore highlights and second-tier destinations of ASEAN countries – Thailand, Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Lao PDR, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, and Vietnam – by driving themselves safely and enjoyably. The information in the guidebook is also designed to help self-drive travelers create their own itineraries.

The guidebook provides the following information:
– Visa and entry requirements;
– Permits for vehicles;
– Cross-border procedures;
– Code of conduct / and Dos and Don’ts for self-drive tourism;
– Emergency calls for tourists;
– COVID-19 situation and vaccine passport website link;
– Left/right-hand drive;
– Recommended routes.

Kenya

I have heard Kenya is the Thailand of Africa. The good and bad is, its easy to get a woman the bad is its now a top spot for kiddie diddlers. Lots of Brits and Euros going there to get with kids. I also hear that a surprisingly high percentage of the local female population in the capital are in the sex game.

Uganda

At least 5 people in the last 3 months have told me Uganda is a must. That the capital is a top club spot. They party and club non stop there.

Morocco

Although its technically a moslem nation arabs and moslems I know say the women there are easy...very easy.

Any advice? Its a huge continent.

Fellow quester and all-round top bloke Mekong has already generously PMed me in the direction of a couple of bars, but any additional up-to-date tips gratefully received. I realise that tuppenny tarts are not really 'on' in Vietnam in the same way they are in Thailand, but I'm not fussed about that, as I'll be syphoning the python in BKK both sides of the Vietnam trip. Just want a bit of sightseeing, a few ales, and a bit of laughter and fun.

I'll be a first timer in Hanoi. Visited Ho Chi Min some years ago, but I understand it's a very different set up there anyway?

I will of course post a trip report (sobriety permitting ), so there's something nice for you all to look forward to, lads. Probably.
