My gf and I (yes, gf) are going to be in Bangkok for one night before going to Pattaya. I have not 'partied' in Bangkok in over 20 years. I always made a bee line to Pattaya. Anyway, its her first trip, she's excited and we want to see the 'best' (subjective) area to spend the night in among Soi Cowboy, Nana Plaza or Patpong (unless I have forgotten another place). Trip is not till June, we'll get in on a Saturday evening, leaving Sunday afternoon probably next day. Trying to see bars, etc, some shopping, maybe 1 'cultural' site.

The second issue is a 'decent' hotel. Not looking for 5 star but not 1 star either.

PS: we both like girls so its not bringing sand to the beach or 'coal to Newcastle' she is the 'beach' haha

After 3 years away, if Thailand gets rid of all Covid requirements for those with the 2 shots and booster, I’ll be back either next Fall or early winter. I still have the house near Chiangmai, unoccupied at the moment. My wife also was left a house just north of the airport in the Zhongshan Dong area, by her deceased ex husband. I’m not sure in what condition it’s in, but it does need a roof. I’ll be moving back permanently in 4-4.5 years, after my son graduates from high school. My wife may or may not move back, as 6 months ago, she opened a Thai restaurant in the Kansas City area, with a loan from me. It’s my insurance policy for her, in case something happens to me.
The problem with the house is my wife’s best friend was occasionally going by the Hong Dong house but won’t now, since she and her son has seen the ghost of my wife’s ex inside the house. From what I understand, some neighbors have either seen the ghost or believe my wife’s friend account. The lady that takes care of my house refuses to go to house to take pictures because of the ghost sighting. When I go over later this year, I would like to stay at least 2 months to work on my house and get the Hong Dong house ready to rent out, if it is salvageable. Am I going to have problems going anyone to work on it? I’m assuming that I need to erect a spirit house and have monks bless the house. I’ll do it if that ends the ghost stories. What do you guys think? Will I always have a problem renting the house because of the ghost stories and nosy neighbors telling them to potential renters? I have no idea if the neighborhood is strictly Thai or if I can rent to foreigners who wouldn’t be put off by the ghost stories.

We just stayed at the Chatrium Riverside, 2160 baht for TWO nights including tax and breakfast using the governments 40% discount and their special offer. Nice to see no embarrassed looking out of place bar girls at breakfast so they probably don't let them in, thank goodness. Lots of 5 stars offering crazy prices to keep going.

If I want to buy a condo when I am not in Thailand:

I suppose i need to give someone a power of attorney, notarized in the country where I am now. And an authorization to access my bank account (has to be done at the embassy of the country where I am now), otherwise there is no way to get the necessary FET (formally TT3).

	Any experiences?

I’d like to get your opinion on a dispute I am having with a tenant at my house in Chiangmai. His lease started last May 22 and he has asked several times if he could extend it by 2-3 years. I got a message from him 3 weeks ago that, because of the coronavirus in England, some of his tenants there were requesting rent reductions because of the virus, as they are allowed to under English law. I told him to let me know how that turns out and I would try to work out something with him. Today, I got a message that there was a rat in my attic and one set of lights were fluttering, insinuating that the rat was eating the wiring (which may or may not be true). He has been kind of a pain with his problems with the house, mainly electrical which required replacing the switch, not electrical wire eaten. I have a teak sliding front gate that his dogs were forcing the wood apart far enough to get out, so I hired someone to put thick wire mesh over the slats but should have told him that it was his problem because of the dogs.
anyway, I offer to have someone over to set traps for rat and fix lights. He says he is in quarantine for coronavirus (he’s not infected but doesn’t want to catch it). He will not let anyone in house. He wants to move immediately and wants his 40,000 baby back. As he is 30,000 baht in arrears on rent, I offer to pay him 10,000 baht. As he will not be staying for the final month, he wants that month’s rent back, 20,000 baht. I refuse, we go back and forth descending to not nice comments. After 3 hours of almost constant messaging, he agrees to the 10,000 baht and will move out this Wednesday but leave his belongs there until May 22nd.
Am I being a prick with him. He kept repeating that living there was a health hazard. Would THAI law back that up. Any comments would be welcome.

I had been using this place since it opened well over a decade ago and though well down the Soi I needed a couple of rooms for a few nights and their website had a spectacular deal so I booked.

Rolled up and the front of house was like a shabby curry house. I saw a total of 4 rooms and they were all shite. Very worn, stale smelling, old, just terrible.

I didn't stay and used Bt100 to have the porter ferry me to the JW Marriott down the Soi where I negotiated a very good deal under their website including a suite upgrade for me and club benefits for both rooms.

Many more options I know but it was for so many years a safe bet down Soi 2 with apartment like rooms with kitchens for very reasonable prices.

Hotels in Bangkok, Thailand.

Update.

Yes, there are many threads on this fine board about accommodation in Bangkok, Thailand.

Yet it might be time to update the bestest hotels. For the wandering farang tourist.

Bestest is defined by your parameters. From an un-airconditioned hostel to the Landmark on Sukhumvit.

How about a a name and address or location.

And of course price. In the spirit of internationalism - Baht, Euro, Pound, US Dollar, AUD, NZD, DKK, or any currency that you actually use.

In other words, where do you stay, amount, location, why . . . and any extra tidbits you can add about hotel and about location.

Like a moth to a flame — a stinking decrepit flame well past its sell-by date whose carpets are musty, whose clientele (and I include myself) resemble a ragbag assortment of alkies and weirdos and loons and goons and ne'er-do-wells that make the f*cking Addams Family look normal — I return to the Nana Hotel, time after time, as old Cyndi Lauper sings.

I tell myself that there are 2 good reasons for this. In fact there are 3. (Reason 3, trivia fans, is that once old Fiery jack's got a few drinks down his throat he's drawn to Nana Plaza and the tuppenny tarts therein like a pig after truffles. ) The 2 reasons I more readily, and more publicly, admit to are: 1) the Nana Hotel and surrounding area are great for 'people watching' , and, 2) I like a good outdoor pool (and one that's bigger than a postage stamp, thank you kindly) and I haven't found a hotel with a better or better-sized pool in Bangkok, though surely there must be one?

To cut to the chase (or as near to it as your old pal Ramblin' Jacky's ever gonna get... ), I'll be in BKK next week and have already booked online at the Nana Hotel, but I can always cancel that without loss of monies or face, since all they ask for is your, ahem, 'name'. To be honest, the last time I stayed there (last September: see Trip reports) I did find myself thinking 'F*ck's sake, this place really is a f*cking dump!' on more than one occasion (in fact one every occasion I was sober (so, in fact, on exactly one occasion: when I checked in)). Plus, it's not that cheap now, considering what a shit hole it has become. And, anyway, I'll be over on a 'business' trip , so I won't be paying.

QUESTION: Are there any decent, tart-friendly hotels on (Lower) Sukhumvit that have a good outdoor pool? (Hotels farther afield considered, as long as they're tart friendly.)

Thanks, lads. Hope someone can suggest somewhere, or Nana it is, again...

Serious topic guys.

A friend, Filipina, mid 30's, decent, good catholic girl, is planning a few nights in Bangkok, an honest to goodness temples, food and markets holiday. She needs a decent and cheap place to stay, pretty much any area that has restaurants around and with easy access to the city. Looking at Khao San area but a lot of hostels with shared accom and I think she would prefer a little privacy. Any ideas, advice?

Anyone with an off duty yf or gf with a day to spend as a tour guide?

Options?

Ta muchly in advance.
