I still consider Jakarta a worthy destination for someone wanting to experience a different city and culture to the usual suspects, but as a longterm destination, it has some serious drawbacks:

- I consider the traffic to be even worse than BKK. I know thats a big call, but in my experience its even worse

- the obvious solution is to base oneself in Central Jakarta. Until you get an idea of the scale of the city, its difficult to understand just how big an area 'Central Jakarta' really is - there seems to be an 'uptown' and a 'downtown'. Both are dominated by high-rent apartment towers aimed at expats on healthy packages. How high ? Anywhere from 2K USD a month to 6K and up - in one case, the '6K' figure was actually Euros ...

- there are cheaper alternatives, and one is Depok to the south of the Central Jakarta madness. Home to several Indonesian universities and seemingly filled with cheap apartments, it seems like the answer to our prayers, right up until you consider your transport options. Read about the train network in Indonesia - they run late (and sometimes not at all) and overcrowding is so bad that the desperate are forced onto the roof and, in some cases, into a bodybag.

So, there you are - on a motorbike in a foreign country with a delightful blend of Beemers and trucks which seem to have had their last oil change sometime in the early 80s. Oh, and about a million or so kamikaze bike riders who have apparently surrendered themselves to God's mercy before setting out on this hazy-yet-sweltering trip to the promised land.

For a younger, braver soul, none of the above would be a deterrent, but for an old fart it most definitely is. Other parts of Indonesia, particularly Bogor and Bandung, are much nicer but dont have the range of distractions that the capital can offer. Just my two cents worth, and I'm always happy to hear from someone who is enjoying life in Jakarta in 2012.

We have rooms at the Kempinski but having never stayed there and as essentially Jakarta newbies not sure how near or far we are likely to be from anything. Looking for bars/pubs with a little life. Not opposed to places full of Indo freelancers as the girls with us are not uncomfortable in that situation and indeed like to check out the talent too! So lively (safe) places are of interest. I remember the HRC years back was quite okay. Similar places today?

jakarta

At the end of January I'm hitting one of these two destinations. It's proving a tough call and I need your help. Do I stick with the tried and true oir do I make the leap into the great unknown?

I've been to Thailand many times but never to Jakarta. Which is the better destination and why?

Thailand Pro's:

Go Go's. I like to drink and perve. I don't bang these girls anymore but it's always nice to look!

Convenience. It's so easy to move between Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya. I can spend a few days on the beach cruising around on a scooter, shopping and hanging out with friends in Bangkok and then take a drive to Pats for some real debauchery.

The ability to pick up at BED Supperclub or some other upmarket venue while also getting down and dirty at a go go within a few minutes on the skytrain is fantastic.

Friends. It's always good to catch up with old friends. I miss them and it'd be great to see them again.

Shopping. The shopping in Bangkok is excellent. I know where to shop and can haggle using my beginners's Thai.

Cons:

The political unrest bullshit could crop up at anytime and the airport could close leaving me fucked. I start a new job a few days after my return from BKK or Jkt and they won't tolerate any excuses.

Been there done that. Lets face it Thailand isn't a challenge for me anymore and I'm getting sick of treading where every other cunt on this earth has already tread.

Jakarta Pro's:

It's all new so every new venue has unlimited potential and that feeling of anything could happen. This is quite a rush for a solo traveller.

GFE: I've had many of these in Thailand. In fact, it's hard to imagine being treated any better. I've had holidays paid for me, stunning hi-so Chinese Thai girls giving me great sex, working girls banging me for free trying to line me up for marriage, I've been treated like a King. But, from the Jakarta thread it seems that I can get this expereince in spades from both working and non-working girls everywhere. It seems that girls in the street are very approachable. Thaialnd is similar for me but the thread suggests its even better in Jakarta! that has to be seen to be believed.

The thread also suggests that picking up even working girls in Jakarta is very natural and money isn't such a huge and upfront issue, it's more of a bonus for the girls. This is a great feeling.

CONS:

LOGISTICS: Jakarta from all reports is a huge city and you can spend a lot of time in taxis trying to find a good venue thats pumping and has what u want. I'm impatient and with limited travelling time I don't want to waste too much time mucking around.

LIMITS: Indonesia doesn't have the open debauchery of Thailand. Some might say that's a good thing and it may well be. But, the ability to go to venues with lots of nudity anytime I want is appealing.

ENDORSEMENTS: I keep running into people who rave about Jakarta. All these people can't be wrong. There must be something special about this place and that makes it an attractive destination for me. Why is this place appearing on so many lists as the number one destination to go?

So, for those who have been to both places please provide your two cents!

After spending hours trawling thru the Jakarta threads I wonder how relevant the 'Is Jakarta worth a visit?' thread is today? It's seven years old so an update would be great!

Are the venues listed still god? If not, where are the hot spots now? Are the girls still as friendly or are they hardened now from Bules approaching them in the street? Are the clubs packed with Bules who are sick of Thailand?

Post your recent experiences.

1.) Do Indo girls shave?

2.) Are they keen on or do they ask for anal?

3.) What is the Indo equivalent for butterfly? not just the Bahasa translation but the meaning of the word relative to Thai BGs.

4.)Is it ok to be a butterfly and score multiple ho's from the same place?

Maybe headed that way for a few days, it's been years and I never really mongered much last time, two girls in about 3 weeks I think but one, worked in immigration, was a non stop shag-a-holic so I never got a chance to pace myself much.

In the Glodock area they are dozens of them lined up along the street. I bought a Viagra tablet that appeared to be sealed in the factory sealed package. It did give be a one time erection but it wasn't like Viagra should be. In my experience, Viagra provides an erection for about two hours. In addition, the next day I felt "weird". It was a kind of low level buz that lasted most of the day. I'm wondering what that shit was. It certainly wasn't Viagra.
