buddha Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 If I show up in the airport with a bicycle will there be any taxes due, import fees, etc? It will be coming off of the baggage carosel in a box.
Fatbastard Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 If its used bike and for your own use, I doubt if they will try and charge you for tax, if its obviously new thay may try for a 1000 Baht contribution.
buddha Posted May 5, 2006 Author Report Posted May 5, 2006 I wonder how much it would cost to ship a bicycle from the states? UPS
OCgringo Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 cheaper to pay the 1000 baht or so "donation" anything overseas USA outbound is super expensive UPS, Fed EX etc
Old Hippie Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 Shipping it would almost certainly cost an import tax as well...or so I'd think...maybe cheaper to go buy a bike there...?
Bangkoktraveler Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 Can you break it down and put it in your luggage? Just an idea.
Old Hippie Posted May 6, 2006 Report Posted May 6, 2006 I would think it would basically count as one piece of checked baggage...most bike places will sell Bike bags or cases, and the airlines used to give you a box for a bicycle, best to go a few days in advance...
buddha Posted May 6, 2006 Author Report Posted May 6, 2006 I would basically go to a bike shop and get two bike boxes and construct a 'heavy duty bike box'. I would then check it on the plane. I have never done this on an international flight. Some US airlines see the bike and ask if it's a bike and then they charge $90 USD for transport. Sometimes they don't ask. I would just say I am going to bicycle around Thailand. I don't see any reason they would tax, but would like to be prepared.
Guest lazyphil Posted May 6, 2006 Report Posted May 6, 2006 old hippie can you get a bike from the US to Limeyland cheap, hint hint ::
Old Hippie Posted May 6, 2006 Report Posted May 6, 2006 I, as an airline employee, have various privilidges the rest of the "common folk" don't have (nose in the air)...The question is, if I do make that ride (which I might add, I was specially invited to by one of Cambridge's elite (nose in the air again) ) Which bike should I bring? My Trek 8000 Mountain bike (refitted with road tires of course) or my Miyata 610 road bike, both rather elite cycles, and beyond the reach of most people's means (nose in the air yet again, and higher...)...
