Guest Posted March 27, 2002 Report Posted March 27, 2002 What type of phones can be purchased in the United Staes and used there and than by swithing a simm card or chip can be used in Thailand ? Does anybody know it is quite confusing.
Guest Posted March 27, 2002 Report Posted March 27, 2002 If you want one that you can switch the SIM card in then I would say dont! Because they have to be reprogrammed to work with Thailand phones. The other thing that is required is what they call a Tri band phone. The US uses a non standard frequency 800 I think and the rest of the world uses 900 and 1800. So you need one that uses all three bands. If you purchase one then you can use that in Thailand on its original number if you set up a roaming agreement with your service providor. These is only one drawback to this and that is cost! Both for the original equipment and for people ringing you when in Thailand its an international call! Even when in Thailand using roaming and ringing Thai numbers some providors will charge you as an international call even though it uses the local network!! Easiest and cheapest option Buy a phone in Thailand! can pick up some second hand ones in MBK 3 or 4 thousand baht. Along with a prepaid sim, sorted.
