There are now multiple US media outlets, including Reuters, reporting Donald Trump stepped out of the meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky and European leaders to speak with Vladimir Putin. 

The White House hasn't confirmed the call with Russia.

Reuters is reporting some level of talks are expected to continue.
