think_too_mut Posted August 9, 2025 Report Posted August 9, 2025 My daughther (22) , a student in Australia, English language, exams like methodology of teaching, year 3, she is on the way to be a BSC, Honor, a linguist and if she goes the teaching path, International scolls anywhere in the world. She has taken 400 (1:1) Thai lessons with a professional Thai teacher. Thai was the first language she learned, not a novice. She told me, she is now with Thai language where a 7 years old Thai is. I beleive she knows what she is talking about. Can you imagine a 7 years old Thai with that level of Thai language ability, working at the Lotus Tesco or Big C? Nothing from learning Thai unless you dedicate a year, for full time Thai language courses, undivided attention, homeworks. Reading, writing, the talking comes last.
bust Posted December 19, 2025 Report Posted December 19, 2025 My thai languish skills are limited but I found through personal experience that the Thais I had relationships with here in OZ meaning long term as in living together for 5 years on 2 occasions wanted to develop there English skills and preferred to speak English. However I believe it was also calculated to allow them to have conversation knowing I could not understand most of what they were saying. Last one drifted between Thai and Lao. Very hard to become proficient in a foreign language not living where it's the first language spoken. I haven't retained all I have learnt over the years. 1
Coss Posted December 19, 2025 Report Posted December 19, 2025 ditto, though on my two visits to Laos this year, I found I'd remembered more, than I thought I knew. 2
