On a brief fly through Sydney, I was introduced to "The Kitchen" in the Cabramatta Hotel.

I was so impressed that I have to tell y'all about it.

As some may know, I have form in the restaurant space, and it is with some awe, that I recommend this restaurant.

The restaurant owner, a Vietnamese, took over the pub kitchen and thence staffed it the Viet, Thai and Lao staff.

You walk into the Cabramatta Hotel through the corner entrance and there is a typical Aussie Pub Bar, jugs aplenty, tv screens with sport etc, etc, then walking around the bar you see a restaurant packed with customers, you'll be lucky to get a table in the first 5 minutes, but turnover is brisk.

The customers are 90% asian, and some look like, they're ex Vietnam war, each old fella, clutching a Jug of VB.

5 of us had 12 mains; Whelks, Soft-Shell Crabs, 3 different kinds of Lahbp, soup with those offal bits that some turn their nose up at, Crawdads n Corn, Prawns, whole Barramundi (small), Cockles, Crispy Pork, I could go on, but you get the idea.

The quality of the food was excellent, I could not fault it and I normally, when at a restaurant, can.

A Gourmand's paradise.

We liked it so much we went back on our second and last night.

Cabramatta Hotel, worth the 30 km trek from the city centre.

5 of the best 10 Vietnamese restaurants are in Marrickville 10 mins from the city centre. Sydney is spoiled for choice. I used to eat at a fantastic Lao restaurant called Lemongrass in the city. Not sure if it's still around. There is also the Green Peppercorn withing the Civic Hotel
