Australian-British tourist dies after alleged assault in Phuket

Singapore/Bangkok: An Australian-British tourist has died in the Thai holiday hotspot of Phuket after an alleged one-hit attack by another foreigner.

The blow knocks off Jolliffe’s sunglasses and a shoe. It appears to render him unconscious instantly and unable to break his fall. He remains unresponsive on the road as the woman crouches to render assistance.

Hours later, Jolliffe was pronounced dead at Patong Hospital, according to local media reports.

Thai police have identified the suspect as a 29-year-old Turk or Swede. They confirmed he held a Turkish passport, however, his place of residence remains unclear.

The Bangkok Post reported the suspect, whom the outlet identified as “Tugay”, had been on a motorbike and honked as he passed Jolliffe, sparking an argument.

A police source not authorised to speak publicly told this masthead that at the time of the incident, Jolliffe was believed to be on his way to have a meal with a travel agent who had just sold him a tour package.

The suspect was arrested at about 4am the following morning, according to local media reports.

Swedish media outlet Expressen reported the suspect was linked to a criminal network in southern Stockholm and had previously spent six years in prison for an assault in 2019.

British media reported Jolliffe was born in Liverpool, England.

The Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was providing consular assistance to an Australian man’s family.
