Coss Posted May 23 Report Posted May 23 I've just recovered from a day of poisoning, I post this here as a warning, to help those of us who are cooks extraordinaire. You could choose not to read the rest of this post, if you have a delicate nature. Like many here, I've had many bouts of food poisoning, from all sorts of reasons, but mainly bacteria driven, from off food. Yesterday was the exception, actual poisoning, from an unidentified mushroom. Not bacteria. Also not a misguided attempt, to have a trip, to visit occupants of interplanetary and most extraordinary craft. I know this because: I cook many things, often I use dried mushrooms, in cellophane pack/Origin/China. Mouse Ear, Morel, Shiitake, all sorts, but identified. The pack I used yesterday was "Assorted Mushrooms" and on casual viewing, contained recognisable varieties. So I used them in a stew, delicious it was. My thoughts are, that at the 'dried mushroom packing facility', that a poisonous one, unnoticed, was dried and packed and thence made its way to my stew. I don't blame any one or entity, for this, just one little brown mushroom amongst the thousands being packed. Whenever I've had food poisoning in the past, it comes out both ends and is gone relatively quickly, a day or two. This was different. My whole body was in intense pain, for about three hours, I thought I was gonna die, and just as I was about to call the Ambulance, it started to come out of my mouth in streams and streams and so on, after a solid two hours of spewing and retching, it subsided and I started to feel better, the pain vanished in about ten minutes. Curiously, nothing from the distal gastric end... I'm no doctor, but the subjective view I have, is that as the last few fragments of stalky-like bits of mushroom came out of my mouth, the poison source was removed and thereafter the body came right. So a relatively fast resolution and quick recovery, I feel I'm lucky that my body got rid of it so quickly. Today I'm chipper and have a spring in my step, an untended consequence I guess. Belatedly my warning is: beware the unidentified mushroom.
Coss Posted May 24 Author Report Posted May 24 further :: I am advised that the following are likely, if the mushroom was a "death cap" or other very toxic variety, and can commonly appear, after the patient is seeming to get better in the first 24 hrs. • Confusion, extreme drowsiness, fainting, or seizures • Yellow eyes or skin (jaundice) • Severe right‑upper belly pain • Very dark urine or much less urine than usual • Unusual bleeding, nose/gum bleeding, or easy bruising • Persistent vomiting or can’t keep fluids down • Fever ≥38.5°C with feeling much worse • Severe dehydration signs fortunately, apart from slightly darker urine I have none of the others at this time. And I feel generally unwell, but functional. I'm greater than 48 hrs at this point. MLG was so worried she called Laos. ----- I post these kind of things, as hopefully helpful, to any on this board, who have or who may encounter, similar issues.

Coss Posted May 25 Author Report Posted May 25 Ahh, no, I'm all-right now, and alarming as it was, just when I was gonna call an ambulance, it started to get better pretty quickly and real medical people were not required. But at its peak, I thought it was very serious. my mate who's a Medical bloke confirmed, that as it was getting better and I was walking and talking etc, that being told to rest and recuperate, was superfluous, coz that's what I was doing.
Coss Posted May 26 Author Report Posted May 26 True, now that I've experienced it 1st hand, [whole body/intense pain/three hours], despite my somewhat melodramatic post, I do offer the OP as a serious warning. Someone who has a less robust constitution, may not fare so well. I'm still a bit diminished 3 days on. Also rats have been observed, crawling up out of the sewers and dying on the lawn. 🤮
bust Posted May 31 Report Posted May 31 So which one can kill you and which one can take you on 3 - 6 hours of change in consciousness, mood, thought and perception
Old Hippie Posted June 3 Report Posted June 3 The “magic ones” usually grow in cow shit in the USA…Oddly, we are going to pick mushrooms today or tomorrow…
